RUSSIA SIBERIAN ALTAI & ECLIPSE 14 DAYS HOTELS/LODGE/YURT/COTTAGE SPLENDID CITIES AND SIBERIA This 14-day adventure includes the highlights of contrasting Moscow and St Petersburg with their rich and fascinating heritage; we travel by overnight train journey between the two. We then travel to the far south of Siberia, to Altai, where we plan to witness the wonders of a total eclipse and discover more about the indigenous people's unique animist culture. Moscow Heart of the nation Our explorations start in Moscow, the cultural, political and economic capital of this mighty nation. We journey by metro, a cultural tour in itself; the stations, built in the 1930s, are a showcase for the art of the era. We discover the cavernous red-walled Kremlin with its incredible complex of palaces, cathedrals and churches. Outside are Red Square and the multi-coloured onion-domes of St Basil's, where Ivan the Terrible once worshipped. St Petersburg 'Venice of the North' Set on the hundred islets that form the Neva River Delta, Peter the Great's wonderful city is acclaimed by many to be Europe's most beautiful. It is also home to the Hermitage Museum, without doubt one of the world's greatest art galleries. During our stay here we visit the Hermitage, stroll down Nevsky Prospekt, gaze in awe at the golden domes of the fabulous cathedrals, and visit Catherine the Great's Palace in Pushkin. And there is still time if you wish to take a hydrofoil boat trip along the River Neva to Peter the Great's summer palace in Petrodvorets, and perhaps a ballet performance by the Kirov. Siberian Altai The lands known as the Altai straddle some of the farthest flung corners of Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China and southern Siberia, where we base ourselves for 7 days. A wilderness of steppe, mountains and lakes, they Catherine's Palace, Pushkin Ref SR2 attract and inspire artists and hikers, as well as those interested in the ancient animist beliefs of the indigenous peoples. We plan to watch the eclipse at a specially chosen site and search for ancient burial mounds and petroglyphs in the Uch-Enmek Karakol Nature Reserve. At Denissova Cave, a UNESCO site and dwelling place for ancient man, many artifacts have been found. There's also plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors, with opportunity for easy walks, rafting, or you may just wish to relax in a traditional herbal health bath!
