Ancient Buddhist monuments, welcoming people, dense jungle, cool highlands and an idyllic tropical coast. These are just a few of the highlights of this unique tour.
Deserted Cities & Sky Fortress Leaving bustling Negombo, we spend our first days discovering some of the islands well preserved art and stone carvings. Firstly, we head to the ancient ruined city of Anuradhapura and visit Mihintale, Sri Lankas cradle of Buddhism. Then, after seeing the impressive Standing Buddha of Aukana (the sun-eating statue) and the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa, we continue to Sigiriya. Here we make the giddy climb up Lion Rock its ruined fortress precariously perched on top, and its famous heavenly maidens painted in a niche in the sheer cliff face. Guests on Tea Estate We make for the mountains and Kandy, where we visit the much venerated Temple of the Tooth. After a scenic drive through magnificent mountains, we stay at a tea plantation, a unique introduction to the verdant highlands. The air here is refreshingly cool and clear a place of perpetual spring. During the pilgrimage season, it may be possible to make an excursion to climb Adams Peak from here.
