We concentrate on the stunning scenery of the Zomba Plateau and the country's dominating geographical feature, Lake Malawi, the most beautiful of the Great Rift Valley lakes. We also include world-class game viewing in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, regarded as Africa's finest park for walking safaris. Scenery of Zomba Plateau From the capital Lilongwe, we head to Zomba in southern Malawi, a relatively low-lying plateau interrupted by dramatic mountains - a hiker's paradise with plentiful birds and other wildlife and dramatic views across to the Mulanje Massif and Mozambique. During our time here we visit Chingwe's Hole, Queen's and Emperor's views and explore the surrounding montane forest hoping to see wildlife from blue and vervet monkeys to bushbuck, as well as many birds including Livingstone's turaco. Magic of Lake Malawi From Zomba we head to Lake Malawi, enclosed by sheer mountains and edged by endless palm-fringed beaches, a huge inland sea carved out by the Great Rift Valley and the most beautiful of Africa's great lakes. A fascinating journey of contrasts, our tour combines big game viewing in South Africa with time exploring and relaxing in tropical southern Mozambique. Kruger National Park We begin with a drive through the scenically dramatic Mpumalanga area in South Africa, where we pause to view the spectacular Blyde River Canyon. We spend two nights in the huge gamelands of the Kruger National Park. The size of Israel, this famous reserve is home to most of Africa's animal species (including the 'Big Five') as well as excellent birdlife. Staying in a restcamp inside the park itself, we'll make extensive game drives hoping to see lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and much more besides. Massingir Dam & Bilene Bay We head through the eastern border of Kruger on a little-used and rugged route into a remote area of Mozambique spending our first night here at Massingir Dam on Lake Nova. A dramatic drive takes us south east, joining the course of the Limpopo River as we head towards Mozambique's coastal lakes. Our first stop is Bilene Bay north of Maputo. Overlooking Uembje Lagoon, Bilene provides our introduction to Mozambique's wild and stunning coastline. Mozambique: 'Land of Smiles' Our final days are spent making our way north along Mozambique's Indian Ocean coast. Travelling via Xai-Xai we take in Inhambane with its Oriental-Portuguese atmosphere before taking a dhow across the bay and continuing to Vilanculos, jumping off point for the Bazaruto Archipelago. With a choice of activities available including snorkelling, fishing and dhow safaris, you may find it hard to find time just to lie on those paradise beaches! Camera shy?
