None perhaps more inspiring than the ancient city of Leptis Magna staring out to the Mediterranean Sea. From old oasis towns and classic Saharan landscapes to the battlefields of Tobruk and the green mountains of the east, Libya is truly a fascinating country. From Tripoli to the Desert Oasis In Tripoli we visit the excellent museum housed in the great fortress that was once the HQ for Arabs, Ottomans and Italians. Turning south we head into the arid Nafusa Mountains winding up the escarpment to a simple guesthouse. After time to appreciate the surrounding scenery we continue our journey, pausing at old Berber granaries, through the desert to reach Ghadames, a classic oasis town, where the mud alleys of the old town are shaded by giant palms. On our way back to Tripoli we spend a night at the berber town of Yefren and also explore the impressive complex of Sabratha. Uncovering the Greek Cities A short flight takes us to oil rich Benghazi. From here we head to the 'Green Mountains' and the coast. From our base at Susa we'll take our time to visit Ptolemais and the mosaics of Qasr Libya and to wander among the fantastic temples of the Greek city at Cyrene and her port of Apollonia that once traded in gold and wild animals. Brilliantly preserved by the climate, the ruins are still quite overgrown making this an exciting place to uncover the past. A visit to the WWII cemeteries at Tobruk provides us with a stark reminder of Libya's more recent history. Entering Leptis Magna Returning by flight to Tripoli, we visit Libyas most impressive ruins, Leptis Magna. We have plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere and explore this amazing ruined city founded 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians and conquered and embellished by the Romans. The pink marble of the baths and temples, the fine theatres and sculptured friezes are hauntingly beautiful. We also visit the world-famous mosaics at Vill Sileen. The Libyan Sahara is truly one of the world's great wilderness areas. Our journey begins on the Mediterranean coast at Libya's capital, Tripoli, then it penetrates the harsh desert interior as we travel by 4WD to the Akakus Mountains and beyond. By day we explore the legacy of the ancient peoples who once lived in this barren land. While at night we camp wild amidst some of North Africa's most spectacular desert scenery. We finish with a visit to the region's best-known ancient site the renowned Leptis Magna. Ancient Rock Art & Akakus After a brief tour of Tripoli with its world-class museum & impressive medina, we fly south to Sebha to begin our exploration of the Sahara, the largest desert on earth. At Germa, capital of the Garamantian Empire whose warriors successfully repelled the Roman invasions, we discover an ancient trading centre that once formed the link between Equatorial Africa and the Mediterranean coast. Then heading south via the rock carvings of Wadi Methkandoush, we make for the Akakus, a mountain range known for its beautiful red sand and extraordinary rock formations. Amongst these mountains are some of the finest rock paintings in North Africa dating back to 8000 BC, an era when this landscape was grassy savannah rather than sand desert of today. Salt Lakes of Dawada & Leptis Magna We continue our exploration of Libya's Sahara with a visit to the surreal sight of the Dawada Lakes. A series of eleven lakes seemingly dropped in the middle of the desert. Finally camping in the dunes of the Ubari Sand Sea, we enjoy for the last time the tranquillity of the desert before flying back to Tripoli. Our final day is spent back in Tripoli where there is the option to visit Leptis Magna, the amazing Phoenician city later developed by the Romans, where we find one of the bestpreserved ancient cities anywhere. Stunningly located on the shores of the Mediterranean, the ruins are deeply evocative and there is also the opportunity to see the worldrenowned mosaics at Villa Sileen.
