As well as the National Museum of Arts and Royal Palace, we spend time at the horrifying Tuol Sleng Museum and The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek  stark reminders of the country's more recent unsettled history. Fabled Home of God-kings We journey overland to Siem Reap. This will be our base for the discovery and exploration of the vast ruins of the fabled royal city of Angkor, lost and forgotten for over 500 years in the Cambodian jungle. Ruled over by godkings, the ruins declare the power and wealth of the once-mighty Khmer empire. A mile or so outside the city walls are the five stone towers of Angkor Wat, looming high above the surrounding jungle forest, one of the most splendid temples in all Asia. Mystery & Magnificence Some 150 square kilometres are scattered with walled cities and magnificent stone temples, sculptures, reservoirs and causeways, built between the 9th and 13th centuries. Situated in an extraordinary jungle setting, it possesses a mystical and spiritual grandeur similar to the lost' city of Machu Picchu in Peru. On one of our days in Siem Reap we take an excursion to nearby Tonle Sap Lake for a boat trip to the floating villages of Chong Kneas.
