Penang & Cameron Highlands First, we spend a couple of days on the scenic island of Penang in the Malacca Straits, delighting in its flotilla of sailing junks and exploring vibrant Chinatown. Then, heading inland, we journey up to the beautiful Cameron Highlands, situated some 1500m above sea level. We enjoy walks through hill station villages, tea plantations and magnificent gardens so evocative of Olde England! as well as along jungle tracks. KL' & Taman Negara Safari Next we make for Kuala Lumpur or KL', as it's affectionately known one of South East Asia's fastest growing cities. Futuristic skyscrapers now tower above the ancient Moorish architecture. Driving to Kuala Tembeling we continue by riverboat to the Taman Negara Reserve, where there's an opportunity to walk jungle trails, swim in cool streams, take boat trips and explore local caves. The reserve is said to contain the oldest primeval rainforest in the world and from the park's higher viewpoints the jungle canopy extends as far as the eye can see. Wildlife can be viewed from hides; a great way to experience the atmosphere and sounds of this wilderness. Malacca & Tioman Island The historic Portuguese trading port of Malacca is our next stop, with its bustling old town and array of Chinese temples. We finish our tour relaxing on Tioman Island, with its sandy beaches, lush green vegetation and coral reefs. We visit Borobodur Temple, see Mount Bromo at dawn and enjoy the beaches and handicrafts of Bali. Wonders of Borobodur In the lovely city of Yogyakarta, the vibrant cultural centre of Java, we explore the Kraton Palace and lively streets and markets. We spend time at magnificent Borobodur, an architectural masterpiece erected by the Shailenda dynasty in the 8th century AD; its skilfully sculpted shrines and bas-reliefs are dedicated to the life of the Buddha. Heading to the highlands we discover the misty Dieng Plateau, the so-called Abode of the Gods, where some of Java's oldest Hindu temples are to be found in a huge sunken crater, surrounded by steaming mud pools. Sunrise Over Bromo Travelling via the Sultan's palace at Solo and the erotic temple at Candi Sukuh, we arrive at Mount Bromo. From Mount Penanjakan (2770m), we witness the sunrise and watch the early morning mists clear from spectacular craters. Our last stop on Java is at Kalibaru where we stay on a coffee plantation, discovering the many crops grown in this fertile region and from where a number of walks may be taken. Beautiful Bali Crossing the Bali Strait by ferry, we make Borobodur, Buddhist stupa/Dave West our way to Lovina, where we relax on black volcanic sands or perhaps take a boat to look for dolphins (optional). We then drive on to the thriving artistic centre at Ubud; its nearby villages set amidst tumbling limegreen terraces. After visiting the caves and elephant pool of Goa Gajah and the Pejeng temple, there's time to explore the many handicraft workshops or ramble through the rice paddies.
