On this trip we aim to discover something of the fascinating lifestyle of the nomadic people that roam this startlingly untameable region. The largest nomadic population in the world, the Mongols are a proud people whose warrior history belies their welcoming ways. Sunset over the Gobi desert/Jake Corke From Steppe to Gobi After sightseeing in the capital Ulaan Baatar, we head out across the steppe eventually arriving at our encampment at the foot of Hogno Khan (Mountain) where we stay in traditional gers (nomadic felt tents). Here we have the opportunity for short walks or maybe even a visit to a local ger. Our next stop is at Karakorum from where Genghis Khan led his nomadic hordes out of Asia on horseback, on an extraordinary and historic world conquest. Whilst here, we visit Erdene-Zu, Mongolias first Buddhist monastery. Next we turn south the steppe giving way to a vast emptiness as we head deep into the Gobi desert. We hope to meet friendly nomadic families grazing their herds and could even be invited into their gers to try a bowl of airag (fermented mares milk!). At Bayanzag we visit the site where dinosaur eggs were found in the 1920s and also see the Moltsog sand dunes, before continuing to our last camp on our Gobi quest in the foothills of the Gurvansaikhan Mountains (part of Altai). To the Edge of Siberia Flying back to Ulaan Baatar, we head through the Terelj National Park to Khan Khentii, a Special Protected Area where our ger camp is in a strikingly beautiful setting. There are a number of easy day walks or you may wish to simply relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. There is also the chance to try some gentle rafting on the Tuul River (optional). Nomadic Trek Ref GKT SIBERIA the Singing Dunes, before starting our 3-day camel supported trek through this isolated wilderness. Mountain areas provide a temperate climate in the middle of this generally dry and rugged region. Yak Supported Trekking After a brief return to Ulaan Baatar we head out for our 4-day yak cart supported trek taking us through the green Khan Khentii, a wilderness which is the southernmost reach of the Siberian taiga. A profusion of wildflowers grow in the forests and along the rivers. The local people of the area will be our trailfinders and we are accompanied by local herdsmen on horseback. Our equipment, luggage and cooking gear are carried on yak carts.
