zambia Zambia The First Sparks Project to help Yosefe School Objectives To help fund and commit to a schedule of work to provide maximum long term benefit for Yosefe and Mkasanga Schools. Sponsors The First Sparks project is a joint venture between two organisations in the UK who are committed to help provide education to children. " Promethean the UKs leading manufacturer of interactive whiteboards for schools " Families Worldwide, the only UK company dedicated solely to adventure holidays for families. helping yosefe school Yosefe Basic School Yosefe School has been growing steadily over the last 20 years largely thanks to funding from generous sponsors and thoughtful planning. In a poor area with no electricity, the school is a terrific success story so far, though theres a long way to go... It now has nearly 900 pupils (of whom well over 100 are sponsored) and runs classes in three shifts. Its success is epitomised by Abraham Banda, a former pupil who, thanks to the schools education, has become general manager of the Kapani, a first-rate lodge with excellent facilities and top guides. Fund-raising and sponsorship started at the school more than 20 years ago with the aim of bringing the opportunity of a basic education to as many children in Mfuwe as possible. Since then, thousands of children have been sponsored through basic school, classrooms have been built, teachers housed and a library established. Students have been supported through their education from an early stage; most are orphans and could not otherwise hope for any form of school education at all, let alone college. The School project is run entirely voluntarily by staff at Kapani Lodge and school leavers. But the school needs more teachers and more housing; it wants to help many more local children. Families Worldwide, in association with our project partners (see opposite), is hoping to raise enough money to fund the building of a new school block, which will house up to six classrooms, as well as helping with other important projects such as water, sanitation and tree planting. Working closely with Kapani Lodge and Yosefe School, the First Sparks project has committed over £40,000 to help the school in 2008/09. Families Worldwide will make a donation to the Yosefe Primnary School - £100 per booking Mkasanga Basic School Mkasanga School is further north in the Luangwa Valley and is even more remote. It has 380 pupils and is virtually inaccessible from November through to March due to the rains. Here our priority is to give the children and staff working toilets, classrooms that have windows and to provide them with school text books and reading material to help the children with their studies. By travelling with us to Zambia you will be helping to raise funds for these schools, as well as visiting it and getting to know its pupils. SEE US ON THE WEB AT familiesworldwide.co.uk 35
