Sharm El Sheikh TRANSFER TIME 20 mins Bucket-loads of sun, sea and fun is Sharm in a nutshell. On the southernmost tip of Sinai Peninsula, drenched in hot sunshine, everything it has to offer comes down to location. The Red Sea with incredible coral reefs, shipwrecks and marine life all basking in its warm waters, is why it's one of the world's blockbuster scuba spots. And that's not all. There are still the luxury hotels, fabulous shopping malls and endless supply of restaurants to think about. Not to mention the camel treks and desert excursions. All topped with a large helping of electrifying nightlife. Sun, sea and sand top the order of business on Egypt's Red Sea Riviera. Thousands of kilometres of white sand and world-class coral reefs mean some holidaymakers are either sunlongerbound or under water during their stay. Set on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh is the Red Sea Riviera's most popular resort. White sand beaches spread out for 60 kilometres along the coast, and the waters are full to the brim with marine life. Ras Umm Sid is one of the most accessible dive sites in the area. And the famous Ras Mohammed National Park is just 20 kilometres away. Sharm El Sheikh is also close to Egypt's nightlife capital, Na'ama Bay. Across the Gulf of Suez, Hurghada's hot on Sharm's heels in terms of popularity. It's got 20 kilometres of beaches, and a nightlife scene that combines lantern-lit shisha bars with big-name nightclubs. Elsewhere, Taba and Marsa Alam take a low-key approach to the beach break. Their swathes of sand are among the most unspoilt in Egypt, and evening entertainment revolves around sunsets rather than disco balls. Finally, the Red Sea Riviera puts some of the world's greatest historical sites at your fingertips. The Sphinx, the pyramids and The Valley of the Kings are all within day-trip distance when you stay here. Beaches The Red Sea has some of the finest diving and snorkelling in the world. The warm, tranquil waters and coral reefs shimmer with marine life and colourful plants, create a magical underwater Eden. The most popular dive sites, with wrecks and sheer drops, are Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam. But more experienced divers might prefer the comparatively unexplored waters of Taba or Makadi Bay. In these quieter areas you might even be able to spot turtles or reef sharks. Back on dry land, white sands stretch as far as the eye can see. Dotted with sunbeds, parasols and palm trees you'll always be able to find a shady spot away from the sun. On the edge of the beaches, cosy beach cafés mingle with hotel restaurants, so whether you want a leisurely lunch or a quick snack, you'll find something to whet your appetite. Marsa Alam TRANSFER TIME Approx 30 mins from Marsa Alam airport Here, white sands and sapphire seas envelope spectacular coral reefs. Marsa Alam does everything right for a quintessential Red Sea holiday. Fast becoming a major resort, its virtually unspoilt coast offers mangroves and reefs ideal for donning a snorkel or wetsuit. Join a boat trip or plunge off a long jetty and you'll be greeted by some spectacular underwater sights. When dry land beckons, take a trip to El Quseir, with its small harbour, medieval fort and a history stretching back to Roman times. Taba TRANSFER TIME 50 mins from Taba airport With the Middle East one side and Africa the other, Taba feels like a focal point. Its ancient Sinai mountains, Jordan desert and waters of the Gulf of Aqaba offering some of the best scuba diving on the Red Sea Riviera. As well as Taba's bars, restaurants and discos being pretty much confined to the hotels, this is a place to come just to chill out. Meanwhile, just south is Taba Heights, a purpose-built resort with casinos and a golf course. Which, is also within reach of the Lost City of Petra and Pyramids of Giza.
