Set on a hillside that leads down to the sea, it's backed by pine forests and vineyards. And the village's name, which means `hot spring', is a clue to the seven volcanoes that live nearby. You can check them out by following the local `ruta de los volcanes' - or volcano trail. For something less taxing, head for the beach area, known as `Faro de Fuencaliente'. The volcanic sand-and-pebble shores are guarded by stripy red and white lighthouse and the waters here are popular with scuba divers. As for the village itself, think traditional whitewashed houses with little balconies and a few sleepy squares. You'll also find a handful of restaurants, bars and cafés where you can enjoy a glass wine from the local winery, which is the largest and oldest on the island. EXPLORE YOUR DESTINATION Garafia and Roque de los Muchachos This trip kicks off with some amazing views from the Las Angustia ravine, before taking you through the twisted-rock landscape of the northwest coast. Also planned is a visit to the archaeological museum, although the high point quite literally - has to be ascending the tallest peak on the island, Roque de los Muchachos. As you'd expect, the views here are second to none. Tour of the North Your first port of call will be the evergreen forest, Los Tilos. Full to the seams with wild plants and animals, it's been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, so it's well worth having the camera handy. Afterwards, it's onto the pretty little village of San Andres, before you finally make your way to the natural seawater pools - known locally as Charco Azul. La Palma is an island that's totally unspoiled. Think sleepy villages with dinky white houses and pretty towns lined with colonial buildings. The isle is diverse, too. Green forests in the north, volcanic craters in the south, and pine forests in the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente. Its status as a UNESCO biosphere reserve should therefore come as little surprise.
