TOP 3 Things to See & Do 1. Tombs of the Kings Don't get this place muddled with Egypt's Valley of the Kings - there's no pharaohs here. Instead, it's the burial place of about 100 aristocrats from the 3rd century BC. Their sleep hasn't been undisturbed-some tombs were used as workshops during the Middle Ages. While you're here, take a look at the stone pillar which, according to legend, St Paul was tied to for preaching the news of Christianity. Cyprus "With beautiful beaches and a bigger-than-average bank of historical sights, Cyprus has all the ingredients for a great break." 2. Kourion Time your visit to this ancient city right and you might get to watch a play - just as the ancient Romans did over 2,000 years ago. Here, the ruined amphitheatre been has been painstakingly restored, and now hosts plays and concerts. While you're in town, save time for the House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators, both have beautiful mosaic floors. W east or west. ith big-hitters like Aphrodite's Rock, the Tombs of the Kings and the Kykkos Monastery to its name, Cyprus certainly isn't short on sights. But the island's star cast are without doubt the beaches wrapped around its coastline. And if you're wondering which to choose it's a case of heading 3. Lefkara Lace-making has always been big news in this village. Back in the 15th century, Leonardo Da Vinci stopped by to pick up an altar cloth that's still used in Milan's cathedral today. The Lace and Silverware Museum is worth a visit if you want to swot up on some history. And if you're planning to buy, make sure it's the real deal - that means lace made with Irish linen and French DMC thread. Cyprus' west coast runs from Polis down to the pretty port city of Limassol. Resortwise, Paphos is probably the most well-known. Home to a handful of sand-and-pebble beaches and more watersports than you could feasibly fit into a week. Next-door Coral Bay is the quieter side - shallow water here makes it a popular spot with families. Mention east Cyprus, meanwhile, and the name on most people's lips is Ayia Napa. Famous for mega-clubs and an every-hour-is-happy-hour attitude, it's on a par with the nightlife in Ibiza. Away from the strip, its yacht-lined harbour, white sands and theme parks have made it a favourite with people looking for a neon-free break, too. Heading north you come to Protaras, or Fig Tree Bay to use its other name. The beach here goes on for what seems like forever, and as for the town itself, expect round-theclock entertainment, with everything from traditional restaurants to karaoke bars.
