TOP 3
Things to See & Do
1. Alanya Castle
Back in the day, it was soldiers who paced Alanya Castle's six-kilometre walls on the lookout for invading armies. These days, though, it's tourists that walk its perimeter and poke around its ruined Byzantine church. You can walk to it from Alanya's harbour - it's a three-kilometre trip with some great views thrown in.
Turkey
"Otherwise known as Turkey's Mediterranean Coast, this mountain-backed region rolls the country's best bits into one. Expect great beaches and top sights at every turn."
2. Aspendos
Thespians eat your heart out. The city of Aspendos is home to Turkey's bestpreserved Roman theatre, and one look at its stage will have am-dram aficionados digging out a copy of Romeo and Juliet. Built by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, it could seat 15,000 people in its heyday. And it's not the only thing worth checking out here - the city's also got a striking basilica to its name.

ith super-sized hotels popping up left, right and centre, Antalya has become a favourite among holidaymakers. It's no wonder really. You can't move here for golden beaches, dramatic waterfalls and age-old sights, not to mention a whopping 21 of the country's total golf courses.
3. Karain Cave
This mountain cave, just north of Antalya, makes for a pretty spooky day out. For starters, the roof looks like Delia's gone to town with the royal icing - all weird flicks and peaks. And inside, a load of cleverly-lit stalactites add to its surreal appeal. Factor in bones and tools left here by tribes as far back as 30,000 years ago, and it's as eerie as they come.
To dig into Turkey's past, check in to Side. Pronounced `Sea-day', this ancient walled village has low-rise hotels and converted stone buildings. Star sights include the amphitheatre, Roman baths and Temple of Apollo. The resort has 2 sandy beaches - head west for the lively watersport stretch, or east for the peaceful dunes. West of Side is the laid-back resort of Lara Beach. Sands stretch as far as you can see and are backed by cafés, bars and restaurants. In May to October, it hosts the world's biggest sandcastle competition. Check out the house-sized creations along the shore. Equally quiet is Belek, in the Taurus Mountains, with a 16-kilometre beach, high-end boutiques, a pine-trimmed prom and golf courses designed by the likes of Nick Faldo. Meanwhile, Antalya, with its golden beaches, back street bazaars and cosmopolitan nightlife, offers the perfect winter antidote. And as the sun isn't as blazing as summer, it's great for exploring its list of historical sights or the beautiful Taurus Mountains.
