Spectacularly set on an azure blue lake and dominated by the four towers of its imposing 12th century castle, Annecy is a picture-postcard alpine destination which forms the gateway to Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva. Not-to-be-missed sights include the exquisite 15th century church of St-Maurice, originally part of a Dominican convent, the stately Palais dIsle and the Musée du Château, the former home of the Counts of Genevois, which is now a well-stocked museum of local art and artefacts. Annecy has many good eateries, with a cluster of particularly fine restaurants around the chateau.

Chamonix
Dominated by Europes highest summit, the Mont Blanc at 4810 m. The famous town is equally vibrant and active in summer. Well preserved architecture and traditional Savoyard lifestyle makes an attractive destination.

This 1930s style hotel is situated in the town centre, moments away from the beautiful lake with its landing stage and beaches, and just 100m away from the magical old town. Located near the station, this traditional, family run hotel is in the heart of town, in an ideal position for exploring the old quarter or taking a boat on the lake. The hotel offers good facilities, including a bar. All 55 air-conditioned rooms have bath or shower and WC, hairdryer, satellite TV, telephone and minibar. Buffet breakfast is included. Single and double bedded rooms are with shower, twin, triple, quadruple bedded rooms only with bath. One child under 12 stays free if sharing with parents (breakfast payable to hotel). Set away from the bustle of Annecy centre in a stunning location overlooking lake Annecy, it is a pleasant 20-minute lakeside stroll to the landing-stages and restaurants of the old town. The style is more that of an exclusive private residence than hotel, the luxurious lounge area affords great views over the lake and its rear wall retains the rugged rock face out of which the original building was hewn 8 centuries ago. From the picture postcard lakeside town up to the Mont Blanc dominated historic city of Chamonix just 2½ hours away. A splendid contrast. Available between 2 May and 1 December. The first 3 nights are spent at the Hotel Carlton in Annecy followed by 3 nights at the 3 star hotel Mercure opposite the station in Chamonix which boasts 120 en suite rooms in 2 buildings with pleasant bar and restaurant in an authentic Savoyard décor and ambience, most unusual in a large hotel. The holiday is on a B & B basis in Annecy and on half board in Chamonix with travel between the two centres included (standard class only).
