Atlantic Coast La Rochelle Once one of Frances most important maritime trading centres, La Rochelle remains the Atlantic coasts premier fishing port. However, its main industry today is tourism, with visitors attracted by its picturesque harbour, quaint old quarter and large, sandy beach. The bustling town has many top restaurants to sample the locally-caught fish and shellfish. Atlantic Coast 22 St Jean de Luz A town with a lot of charm, much smaller scale than Biarritz, and much more authentically French (and Basque, even a bit Spanish) in character and clientele, good sandy beach, fishing harbour, good choice of restaurants. HOTEL ST NICOLAS  Just a short walk from the port, this modern hotel blends well with the ancient buildings of the old fishermans quarter, now home to boutiques and traditional market shops. The hotel will shortly be upgraded to 3 stars. Facilities include a bar, lounge and comfortable breakfast area. Located in a recently developed, quiet neighbourhood between Aquarium and yacht harbour, it is handy for all the major attractions. There are 86 unusually spacious rooms, including many for families, all with bath and shower, separate wc, tv, and telephone. There is also an outdoor swimming-pool with sun terrace. Buffet breakfast. One child under 10 stays free if sharing with parents. High season supplements 23  31 Mar & 1  6 Sep: £6 Reduction 1  5 July and during October: £6 MASQ HOTEL  A real find, this brand new designer three star (upgrade to four scheduled in 2008), ideally located a mere stones throw from both station and historic Vieux Port, yet in a quiet residential neighbourhood. The unprepossessing modern exterior belies the ultra-chic interior, where light, space and elegant sleek lines combine harmoniously in both public areas  reception, lounge, bar, even corridors  and the 76 spacious, immaculately furnished, tastefully decorated rooms. All are fully airconditioned and sound-proofed, with bath or shower, wc, satellite tv, telephone, personal safe and free wi-fi access. Tea and coffee making facilities in rooms. Buffet breakfast. Triple room reduction: £9 High season supplement in June & September: £6 Reduction in October: £8 HOTEL COLBERT  Almost opposite the station, just a stones throw from the lively fishing harbour and picturesque old town, and ten minutes stroll from the long sandy beach, the Hotel Colbert makes an ideal base for exploring both St Jean de Luz and the surrounding area. Both the style of the hotel and the warmth of the welcome encapsulate the traditional Basque essence of this charming town.
