Frances wine capital since Roman times, cosmopolitan Bordeaux is a lively city with fine 18th century architecture, a thriving cultural scene and a modern business and shopping district, centred on the busy Rue St Catherine. Some of the citys best buildings are found along the River Garonne, with the view from the Pont de Pierre particularly good. A playground of the smart set since the 19th century, Biarritz remains one of the Atlantic coasts most chic resorts, popular for its attractive location and year-round temperate climate.
