Corsican Adventure
Ajaccio
A tranquil, elegant resort boasting one of the most beautiful seafronts youll find anywhere. Glorious mountain backdrops, fine sandy beaches, colourful architecture (Genoan and Imperial), excellent museums, (particularly the Musée Fesch with its Italian masterpieces). Superb walks (Parata Peninsula) and awe-inspiring sunsets (Iles Sanguiniaires). With its bustling daily market, Ajaccio epitomises the charm of a small Mediterranean port clothed in radiant sunlight.
streets and covered passageways, is the heart of the old Bastia that developed from the original port and includes the monumentally elegant Place St Nicholas. Exploring the old port dominated by the twin-towered Eglise St Jean-Baptiste is a must.
Calvi and Ile Rousse
A more picturesque location would be hard to find. Calvi, a small, proud town, with 5 kms of fine beach and a simply staggering mountain backdrop, has the feel of a typical, smart Mediterranean resort. Its port and marina, overlooked by the impressive citadel, offers a wide range of restaurants and bars. A short distance along the coast lies the smaller resort of Ile Rousse. A charming town that takes its name from the russet coloured rocks of the Isle of Pietra.

Corte, the mountains and surrounding area
Former capital of the island during its brief period of independence (175569), Corte houses the islands only university. This lively town in the mountains is steeped in history and makes a perfect base for getting out and about to discover the nearby gorges (Tavignano and Restonica), forests (Vizzavona) and the serene beauty of the Venacais. For walkers, there are innumerable, well marked walks of varying length and difficulty. From Corte, you can take the train to any one of a host of local villages and start your explorations from there.

Important note: After a few years of modernisation the Corsican rail network will be equipped with new, state of the art, rolling stock from March 2008. Please note that the possession of a travelcard does not guarantee you a seat. Trains can often be very busy and you may have to stand, but given the nature and beauty of the routes, this should be seen as part of the adventure. Bastia
