It is the oldest city in North America, with a rich sea-faring heritage, its wooden, painted buildings perfectly embodying the colourful nature of the land and people. Go on a moonlit Ghost Walk, enjoy the atmospheric pubs, dinner theatres, live music and sample some traditional Newfie' fare of cod tongue and bakeapple pie. 40 minutes south is Bay Bulls, the departure point for whale and bird watching boat tours to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Here you will find one of North America's largest colonies of Atlantic Puffins nesting in the cliffs. Leaside Manor Location: On a quiet street, 20 minutes walk from St John's harbour. Description: A gorgeous heritage bed and breakfast offering a variety of pretty simple rooms and luxurious suites; all beautifully decorated with pale colours, delicate fabrics, snowy-white bed linen and well-appointed bathrooms, some with Jacuzzis. Many of them have wooden floors and local names such as The Bakeapple Suite and the Kittiwake. Why we like it: Subtle luxury and delicious breakfast. Quality Hotel Harbourview Location: Downtown. Description: Conveniently located with a restaurant on the premises. Accommodation: 160 twin and double rooms. Why we like it: easy access to all major attractions. Salmonier Country Manor Location: Mount Carmel, A small town from where you can visit Cape St Mary's Ecological Reserve, Castle Hill Historic Site and Gooseberry Cove An hour's drive south from St John's and about 40 minutes from Bay Bulls, the departure point for whale, berg and bird watching boat tours to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Description: Charming inn in a restored convent. The front parlour has fireplace, TV, library and games, and the licensed dining room and front deck overlook the river. Every Wednesday during summer there is a traditional Mummers' evening. Accommodation: 7 guest rooms, wooden floors and pretty floral prints. Why we like it: Simple accommodation for exploring the Avalon Peninsula. Fairmont Newfoundland Location: Downtown overlooking the harbour. Description: Deluxe historical hotel with the usual Fairmont comforts. Cabot Club was voted one of Canada's 100 best restaurants, there is also a bar and family restaurant, fitness centre, indoor pool and squash courts. Accommodation: A full range of rooms ranging from the standard Fairmont rooms, the deluxe rooms with the harbour view and the Specialist Gold floor which includes a private sitting room and a daily breakfast. Why we like it: Luxury in the centre of town.
