The Bonavista Peninsula
The Bonavista Peninsula is home to the pretty fishing communities of Trinity Bight and Cape Bonavista. Visit the set of Random Passage and the replica of The Matthew, the ship sailed from Bristol by the 15th century explorer John Cabot when he first discovered Canada in 1497.
Fisher's Loft Inn
Location: Trinity, Overlooking Ship Cove and Trinity Bay. Description: This 4.5-star historic inn is perched on a hill above the old fishing and boat-building harbour of Ship Cove. Features local art and locally grown food. Accommodation: Very pleasant, minimalist-style rooms and one-bedroom suites with white walls and handcrafted furniture. Hilltop rooms recommended. Dinner reservations essential. Why we like it: Casual, yet elegant with great views.
Artisan Inn
Location: In the heart of colourful Trinity. Description: overlooking the ocean with an award winning restaurant; as the name suggests most of the furnishings are locally made and there is also an enormous studio. Accommodation: pretty rooms spread across Artisan and Campbell Inn. Why we like it: Atmosphere and food.
Blue Water Lodge
Location: Secluded lake-side location, close to Notre Dame Bay. ½ way between east and west coast of Newfoundland. Description: The dining room, with beautiful views of the lake, serves breakfast and/or dinner made from local produce. There is a cosy sitting room with piano, a small library and a deck. The lodge has its own canoes and you can hike part of the Trans Canada Trail from here. Dinner reservations essential. Accommodation: 10 simple but comfortable rooms Why we like it: Welcoming hosts and the chance to explore Twillingate to see the icebergs and whales.
Rugged Beauty Boat Tour
Sail from New Bonaventure to the enchanting and long-abandoned communities of British Harbour and Kerley's Harbour. You can return either by boat or hike over the highlands and along tumbling streams. Other highlights include waterfalls, seabirds, whales and eagles. Daily departures: at 1000 and 1400. Price: £37 per person.
