Elmhirst Resort
Location: On the shores of Rice Lake in the rolling countryside of the Kawarthas, north of Toronto. Description: Owned by the same family for 4 generations, this is a superb year-round family waterside resort. Pretty white cottages with green roofs complement the green and blue of the grass, trees and water that surround them. The dining room serves good food locally sourced with an excellent wine list. Accommodation: 1 to 3-bedroom lakeshore cottages with full kitchens. Free activities: Kayaks, canoes bikes, tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, exercise room, sauna and games room. Paid for activities: Riding lessons and trail riding, ATV and snowmobile safaris, flight-seeing and float plane lessons. Wine tasting and fishing. Why we like it: One of the best year-round resorts in Canada.
Westwind Inn
Location: Near Peterborough in the Kawarthas. Description: Pretty, romantic property set in beautiful lake-side gardens. The main lodge, decorated in Olde Rocky Mountain' style with plenty of wood, antiques and memorabilia, houses the dining room, cosy living room, hot tubs and sauna; also a lounge with billiard table, TV and dance floor. Accommodation: lodge rooms some with fireplaces and jet tubs and all but one have a balcony. A chalet, set among the trees 200ft from the main lodge, houses 4 spacious and light suites. Free Activities: Canoes, kayaks, rowboats, water bikes, sailboard, pedal boats, bikes. Swimming pool, hot tub. Putting green, driving net. Paid for Activities: Golf, fishing. Why we like it: Intimate and romantic.
Delta Sherwood
Location: Port Carling, 2 hours north of Toronto. Description: Attractive white clapperboard Colonial style lakeside inn with a spa and beach area. Accommodation: 49 pretty rooms, some with wood burning fireplace and Jacuzzi, and lakeside cottages. Free Activities: Tennis, volleyball, mountain biking, sailing, and canoeing; Paid for: Waterskiing, boating, fishing. Why we like it: Attractive resort surrounded by lakes.
Taboo Resort
Location: Near Gravenhurst, 2 hours north of Toronto. Description: A very elegant resort in the beautiful Muskokas. 3 restaurants with the unique experience which allows you to watch your five or seven course meals prepared up close or on the plasma screen. It is fine dining with a taste of cooking school thrown in for fun along with lots to do for all the family. Accommodation: Big range from regular hotel rooms with double and king size beds to 4-bedroom cottage. Free activities: Beach volleyball court, canoes, pedal-boats and kayaks, 5 tennis courts, 5 swimming pools, fitness centre, children's playground. Paid for: Golf, spa, sea-doos and other boats. Why we like it: Unusual to find a modern resort in the countryside.
Trillium Resort & Spa
Location: Port Sydney Description: Set amid towering hardwoods and overlooking a private lake and waterfall. the main post & beam' lodge has a farmhouse-style lounge and a fine dining room with high vaulted ceilings and arched windows. There is an extensive spa, sauna, outdoor pool, hot tub, tennis court and fitness centre. Adults only. Accommodation: Collection of 6 waterfront chalets and 11 small cottages Activities: Rock climb, bike, canoe, kayak or water bike. Why we like it: Pure indulgence.
