Canada was developed as the railway pushed west through the then inhospitable countryside. Now that same railway gives us, the traveller, a chance to see the country at our leisure in a series of exceptional routes, some developed especially for the tourist, some scheduled services like the Trans-Canada that runs 3 times a week and some still used by the vast freight trains that chug slowly from coast to coast. Royal Canadian Pacific The Royal Canadian Pacific Train, winner of the 2006 best luxury train service runs a few times a year with just 36 passengers; and you need to book early to be one of those lucky few. The route takes in all the highlights of the Canadian Rockies; starting at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary, you will travel through Banff, Lake Louise and through the Spiral Tunnels to the Kicking Horse Valley where you spend the night on the train alongside the Columbia River. Your leisurely day will have given you the chance to explore the historic sites of Banff and had a stroll along the lakeshore at Lake Louise. After a breakfast at the renowned Eagle Eye's Restaurant at the top of Kicking Horse Mountain, you will continue down the Columbia River Valley to Cranbrook, for a private tour of the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel. The train stops at Summit Lake for the evening. After crossing the Continental Divide the following day, you will visit Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump site in the Alberta Prairies. The train stops overnight in Eltham and your last day will give you a chance to visit a working ranch before returning to the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary. The unique carriages of this remarkable train, built between 1916 and 1931, have been elegantly restored in a classic style to enable you to relax in ultimate comfort. Throughout your holiday on the Royal Canadian Pacific, you will enjoy an unparalleled level of personal service; savour the extraordinary delights and delicate creations prepared by the talented chefs and afterwards relax in the 'Churchill Cubby', the private office of Sir Winston Churchill, to watch the constellations slowly reveal themselves as the twilight of a golden sunset fades over the Rocky Mountains. Departures: The Royal Canadian Rockies Experience departs July 14, August 21 and September 16 for a 5 night tour costing £3486 per person. There is also a special culinary tour commencing September 6 and costing £3645. Full details can be obtained from our office or on our website. 10 To book call 020 8776 8709 F
