Arctic Explorer along the Dempster Highway 10 days/9 nights self drive
treeless valleys and uninterrupted stillness. The Highway: The Dempster Highway runs for 461 miles from Dawson City to Inuvik, (Place of Man) an Inuit village 201 miles above the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories. This wilderness route cuts through two rugged mountain ranges, the Ogilvie and Richardson Mountains, miles of stunted spruce and alder "forests" (8'-12' tall) in the Eagle Plains region, and elevated reaches of tundra, before dropping to the Mackenzie River and its flat aspen covered delta. Day 1 Arrival In Whitehorse Upon arrival you will be met by a tour guide who will introduce you to the Yukon and assist you with your baggage and rental arrangements. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore Whitehorse. 2 nights in Whitehorse. Edgewater Hotel Day 3 Whitehorse to Dawson City (535 kms) Cruise the Klondike Highway through the villages of Carmacks, Stewart and Pelly Crossing Along the way, you will catch glimpses of the mighty Yukon River as it journeys to the Bering Sea. You will be entering the traditional hunting grounds of the Kaska Indians, where bears, wolves, lynx and moose roam in abundance. Tour the historic town and its rich goldfields reliving Day 8 Eagle Plaines to Inuvik (350 kms) Just 40 kilometres from Eagle Plains you'll travel across the Arctic Circle. Expect wide Day 7 Bensen Creek to Eagle Plains (352 kms) Wide open spaces takes on a new meaning today as you traverse the tundra! Overnight Eagle Plains Motel Day 5 Dawson City to Bensen Creek (50 minutes) 2 nights at Bensen Creek Wilderness Adventure & Retreat allowing you time to explore the Tombstone Territorial Park. the Spirit of 98 that still haunts the Klondike. 2 nights Aurora Inn Day 9 Optional excursions available such as a cruise on the Mackenzie River or a day tour to Tuktoyuktuk (recommend). Dip your toe in the Arctic Ocean! Price: £1487 pp based on 2 sharing a room. Information boards at the road turnouts brief you on the aurora borealis and the geological and geographic characteristics of the area. 2 nights at the Arctic chalets. Price includes: 9 nights accommodation as specified on a room only basis except at Bensen Creek where all meals are provided, 4x4 for 8 days including 2,000 kms, tax and insurance, air fare Inuvik-Whitehorse. Day 10 You will then take your car to the airport before catching a flight back to Whitehorse for a final night at the Edgewater.
