Alaska & Yukon Places to go, things to do
Kenai & Denali Journey
5 nights / 5 nights (guided) The Kenai and Denali journey is the ideal holiday to make the most of a week - perfect land tour to complement an Alaska cruise. Journey from the snow-capped peaks and emerald waters of the Kenai Peninsula to the glacier-clad Alaska Range. Venture into the wilderness by raft, explore the tundra and hike to see views of Denali, and ride the Alaska Railroad through roadless valleys. This is just one of many escorted holidays we can offer. Please ask us for more details or look at the website.
Bears of Hallo Bay
June 1st through until September 20th Follow the footsteps of Jonathan Scott in his brilliant BBC series Big Bear Week to Hallo Bay. It can be done on a half day tour from Homer, not far from Anchorage (£280) but we recommend you stay in the Katmai National Park. Please note that the walking can be rough and you should be reasonably fit and mobile. Homer is a 1-hour flight or 4-5 hour drive from Anchorage so you will need a night there before your adventure. The Hoedel House is a recommended b&b for around £50. From May to early July the brown bears are engaged in complex, fascinating mating behaviour, digging clams in the inter tidal areas and grazing on the sedge flats. In mid July the first salmon arrive and the bears begin the feast so necessary for survival. Approximate Itinerary Day 1 Board your air taxi in Homer at 1000 to Hallo Bay Wilderness. Travelling in groups of 4-5 guests per guide you will get an exclusive field outing focusing on your interests at a pace and distance that fit your physical ability. During the afternoon, you will walk, stopping often at salmon streams, or food rich meadows depending on current bear feeding habits. Day 2 A continuous full day guided walk to the south of the Camp where there is a very interesting tidal lagoon. The point overlooking the lagoon affords good views of the area's glaciers, volcanoes, brown bears, moose, shorebirds, waterfowl, and nesting bald eagles. The beach combing in this area is incredible due to the nature of the currents. Japanese glass net floats, old shipwreck debris, thousands of beached logs, whale bones, and countless other objects are stacked against the sand dunes. Location: Fox Island, in the heart of Resurrection Bay Day 3 The final morning, enjoy breakfast and prepare to leave between 0800-1100. Price: £920 pp of 2 Tour can be extended for around £250 pp per day. Price includes: flight from Homer, full guided bear watching, accommodation in large, comfortable, heated weatherport cabins, each with two large cots, mattress pads, sleeping bags, pillows, table and chairs, 3 hearty, family style meals each day. (No alcohol provided). Flight operates Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Description: Remote and simple private cabins on an island only three square miles in area, reached by boat from Seward. A glacier cruise and all meals, served family style are included. There is an optional guided kayaking tour.
