Based on Alaska National Park Explorer route (see website), this self drive combines the best of Alaska's scenery and wildlife viewing with the state's most original accommodation. From dog sledding focused lodges to Mongolian-style yurts perched high on ocean-side cliffs, there's something special about each of these properties. Along the way, you'll visit Alaska's most famous national parks; thrill at views of McKinley and wildlife in Denali National Park, watch whales and sea otters frolicking in the waves in Kenai Fjords National Park, pass through the dark pines of Chugach National Forest and drive in the shadow of the towering ranges of Wrangell- St. Elias National Park. of Wrangell St-Elias NP around every corner. Day 1 Seward Anchorage to Seward The Kenai Peninsula offers a stunning drive with its pine forests and tall peaks. On arrival in Seward, transfer 9 miles by water taxi to your overnight accommodation. Evening marine-life cruise in Kenai Fjords National Park; view whales, sea lions, Day 2 Seward to Valdez Take the ferry from Whittier via the stunning Columbia Glacier. Set in a sub-alpine area of lakes located just above Valdez Accommodation: Lake House has impressive views and great bird/wildlife viewing. As an added twist, the B&B is owned by John Devens, the Mayor of Valdez during the devastating Exxon Valdez oil spill. Day 5 Denali National Park Day 3 Richardson Highway Valdez to Delta Junction Keep the camera handy; impressive views Travel to Denali, home to North America's tallest peak (Mt. McKinley 20,320ft). Located just south of Anchorage, this all suite B&B features spacious bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs, plush beds with fine linens, and small kitchens for in room eating. The property boasts a large hot tub overlooking the mountains and ocean, and decks for enjoying meals or sunsets. Day 6 Denali National Park Wildlife tour into the heart of the park. Caribou, moose, grizzly bears, wolves and Dall sheep are often seen.
