You will see some stunning scenery, be able to experience some of the First Nation's culture and meet far fewer tourists than on the usual routes. Day 1 Calgary to Kananaskis (96 kms) On arrival in Calgary, collect your car and start your drive west along the Trans Canada Highway. However, you will soon divert on to the road leading south and into Kananaskis in the foothills of the mighty Rocky Mountains. You will spend 2 nights here which will give you time to rest after the flight and a chance to explore this unspoilt park with its excellent hiking trails and lovely scenery. Delta Kananaskis Hotel Day 3 Kananskis to Waterton Lakes National Park (368 kms) You will be following the Alberta backroads Day 4 Waterton Lakes National Park This park is one of the least visited and most beautiful parks in Canada. It is the perfect place to view spectacular scenery and wildlife. This evening you will be able to join an evening wildlife watching tour. (not Tuesday or Thursday). Day 5 Waterton to Fernie (160 kms) Banff Golden Kananaskis Day 11 Banff to Calgary (130 km) Time for some last minute shopping before catching the overnight flight from Calgary to the UK. Another lovely drive, this time up the Columbia Valley. You should stop at the Fort Steele Heritage Town near Cranbrook, the trout farm and Lake Invermere on the way today through farm and ranching land. Be sure to stop at Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump interpretive centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site which bears witness to a custom practiced by native people of the North American plains for nearly 6000 years. You will spend the next 2 nights in Waterton. Kilmorey Lodge to the mountain village of Panorama where you will be able to relax or enjoy the golf course, mountain biking and hiking and spend 2 nights surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery to be seen anywhere. Panorama Mountain Village Day 8 Panorama to Golden (136 kms) Back into the valley, you will start your journey north to Golden, perhaps stopping for a refresher at the Radium Hot Springs and the Northern Lights Wolf Centre before reaching the comforts of the log cabins at Cathedral Mountain Lodge where you will spend two nights. This will give you time to explore Kicking Horse Resort and Yoho National Park. Cathedral Mountain Lodge Potential add-ons: Swap the Delta Hotel for a night under canvas in a genuine tipi or prospector's tent. Extend the holiday by the Evening Star Tipi Camp Package at the Buffalo Jump. This tipi camping package will provide you with an authentic Blackfoot experience, including campfire story telling by a knowledgeable Blackfoot guide. Price includes: 10 nights accommodation and tax Cross the Continental Divide as you drive the Day 10 Golden to Banff (140 kms) Today you will join the Trans Canada Highway as it wends its way through Banff National Park; you might want to detour to one of the main Rocky icons such as Lake Louise or Peyto Lake en route to Banff which will be your final night of the holiday. Take the chance to ride up the Sulphur Mountain Gondola, cruise Lake Minniwanka or visit one of the many museums. Buffalo Mountain Lodge Calgary Crowsnest Pass. Do stop at The Frank Slide Centre which highlights the rich history of the area and tells the tale of huge Invermere Ainsworth Hot Springs ALB avalanche here in 1903. Fernie has a long history both as a mining town and home of the legendary Griz. Today it is known for its scenery, skiing, fishing and mountain biking and you will spend the night in this lovely alpine village. Helmcken Falls Lodge Day 9 Wells Gray to Revelstoke (350 kms) Continue down the Yellowhead highway towards Kamloops, before turning south past Adams Lake towards Revelstoke and Mount Revelstoke National Park, your home for the night. Glacier Lodge Day 10 Revelstoke to Field (225 kms) A drive along the Trans Canada highway through Glacier National Park takes you into Yoho National Park and the shores of Emerald Lake. You might want to detour to and perhaps stroll around this wondrously coloured lake. Emerald Lake Lodge Day 12 Field to Lake Louise (40 kms) A very short drive today before your last 2 nights in Canada to be spent in the hamlet of Lake Louise. On the way, stop to look at the spiral tunnels where if you are lucky you will see the train crossing over itself and visit both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. Deer Lodge/Moraine Lake Lodge/Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Day 14 Lake Louise to Calgary (180 kms) Return to Calgary in time for your overnight flight to the UK. As you leave the plains, you see the Rocky Mountains in the distance slowly become reality as you approach the park gates to spend the next 3 nights in Banff.
