Kananaskis, Alberta
Hosts to such diverse visitors as the G8 summit and the Brokeback Mountain film crew, this is a beautiful, and compared to its famous neighbour Banff National Park, relatively unknown. Over 4,000 square kilometres of foothills and mountains for you to explore year-round and only a half hour west of Calgary, this area offers something for almost every outdoor enthusiast.
Sundance Lodge & Tipis
Location: 45 minutes from Calgary and Banff in the heart of Kananaskis. Description: Privately-owned, family orientated campground containing traditional Sioux designed tipis and trappers tents for 2-4 people, with wooden floors, wood-frame beds, kerosene lamps and heaters, plus private fire pits. Bedding and cooking utensils can be hired on site and there is a small shop for basic goods. Drinking water is supplied through hand pumps and there are chemical toilets. Why we like it: Good fun.
Delta Lodge at Kananaskis
Location: 45 minutes from Calgary and Banff in the heart of Kananaskis. Description: Prestigious enough to attract the G8 world leaders, a very comfortable hotel with several restaurants and tennis courts. Accommodation: A wide selection of double and king size bedrooms plus the Delta Signature John Palliser Building with its upgraded amenities, complimentary continental breakfast and sitting room. Why we like it: Good hotel in a beautiful and peaceful area.
Homeplace Ranch
Location: In the foothills of the Rockies, south of Calgary. Description: An exceptionally friendly working ranch, owned for generations by the Makenny family. Seven small comfortable rooms with private bath are in two lodges. You may be able to stay overnight in a tepee or camp. Everyone is welcome to share in the life of the ranch, from morning grooming, through rides in beautiful country, to a soak in the hot tub and a huge family-style dinner in the main lodge. Riding Ability: Ideal for beginners. English saddles available. All rides are split up into groups of beginners, intermediate and advanced riders and terrain/pace is chosen according to ability.
