Knight Inlet Lodge
50 miles north of Campbell River, Vancouver Island by floatplane
The remarkable Knight Inlet is a remote but comfortable floating lodge. Open May October, the way you see the grizzly bears varies with the season. In May you travel by boat to see the bears grazing on the shoreline whilst in August the action moves to hides to watch them fishing for the salmon returning to the river; you will be given plenty of opportunity to learn more about the habits of bears and other wildlife from the friendly and very well informed staff. You can chose 3 excursions per day during which you might walk in the rainforest, fish, take a boat trip to see the local scenery, whales and other marine life as well as watch the bears. The first night is spent in Campbell River usually at Herons Landing, then at 0930 the sea plane takes you on a magical journey to the lodge where you can spend just one night but we strongly recommend you spend at least 2 or more. All meals and excursions at the lodge (but not in Campbell River) are included in the price. Accommodation: fairly simple but comfortable bedrooms with 2 beds and a private bathroom plus most of the guest buildings have a sitting room shared between 3 or 4 bedrooms. Included: all wildlife viewing, kayaking and all guided interpretive nature trails, meals, wine and beer with meals. Why we like it: An unforgettable experience with reasonable certainty of seeing a grizzly bear.
