Days 9-10/Palenque Further on, our next stop is the partially excavated town of Palenque. Set in a tropical jungle and considered the most important Mayan archaeological site, we spend time exploring these fascinating ruins with their mystical charm. We then head to the stunning waterfalls of the Agua Azul, a great place for a refreshing dip. Days 11-15/Merida - Chichen Itza - Cancun We journey to the historic city of Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan. Known as the White City, Merida is rich in Mayan culture. We visit the ancient Mayan capital and World Heritage site of Chichen Itza, before some well earned rest at Cancun on the Caribbean coast. Days 16-18/Tulum - Caye Caulker A scenic coastal trip takes us past the Mayan ruins of Tulum and across the border to Belize City where we take a boat trip to the tropical sand island of Caye Caulker. This idyllic Caribbean island is the perfect place to swim, snorkel or take up some of the great diving on offer. Days 19-20/Flores - Tikal Ruins We travel into our third country, Guatemala, then continue to the small town of Flores. We spend time exploring the ancient city of Tikal some of the most famous Mayan ruins, embedded deep in the jungle. Days 21-22/Antigua Guatemala Antigua is one of the world's best preserved colonial cities and one of the most captivating in the Americas. We enjoy a walking tour of the city and climb to the summit of one of the three major volcanos that surround the town. There is free time to wander the cobblestone streets and explore the city's impressive colonial architecture and beautiful surrounds, or join in some of the optional activities on offer horseback riding, cycling and rafting just to name a few. Day 1/Mexico City You can arrive at any time today as no activities are planned. Day 2/Teotihuacan Ruins Today we visit the amazing ancient Aztec site of Teotihuacan. This is the site of the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon and the Calle de los Muertos (Street of the Dead). We explore this incredible complex with a local guide. Day 3/Mexico City We discover the history of Mexico City on a walking tour and then enjoy some free time in the afternoon to make some of our own discoveries. Days 4-6/Puebla - Oaxaca - Monte Alban A short drive from the capital is the charming city of Puebla, known for its well preserved Spanish-colonial architecture a walk through the streets here feels like a walk through time. We then travel on to Oaxaca, the colourful and artistic centre famous for its handicrafts. It's also the gateway to Monte Alban where we visit the incredible ancient Zapotec ruins. Days 7-8/San Cristobal San Cristobal is steeped in tradition yet has a very bohemian feel. The city's cobblestone lanes, red tile roofs, opulent churches and local markets make it a great place to wander around. We venture out and visit a highland village whose inhabitants are known for their unique colourful dress. San Cristobal is a favourite place for many travellers to Mexico and you'll soon discover why!
