cHina 19 Days Days 4-5/Shanghai Shanghai is an amazing city and there is plenty of time to explore. Take a walk along The Bund  resplendent with its Art Deco buildings from the boom period of the 1920s and 30s  and stroll through the magnificent Yu Yuan Gardens, which date back to 1577. In your free time you can visit one of Shanghais many museums or splash out in the ultra-modern shopping district. Theres also some pumping nightlife to check out. Days 6-7/Nanjing Theres loads to experience in Nanjing  this old city was the capital of China in several periods through history including the Ming Dynasty. We visit the Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre, and theres free time to explore Sun Yat Sens Mausoleum at the foot of Mt Zijin, the excellent Nanjing Museum or the Ming City Gates. Days 8-2/Yangtze River Cruise We travel by train past villages and though lush countryside to reach Yichang late in the afternoon. Take a stroll along the banks of the Yangtze River before boarding the riverboat for our Yangtze cruise. Over the following two and a half days we cruise upstream, passing through spectacular gorges. From quiet riverside towns to industrial cities, life along this majestic river is changing at a rapid pace. Our Yangtze River journey ends at Chongqing, where we board the overnight train to Xian. Days 3-5/Xian - Terracotta Warriors Xians most famous attractions, the Terracotta Warriors, are rightly regarded as one of the great finds of the 20th century. The detail in these carved warriors is amazing  no two soldiers are alike. In Xian, theres also time to wander through the laneways of the atmospheric Muslim Quarter or maybe climb the Bell Tower with its commanding city views. On our third afternoon a short flight takes us to Guilin and we travel on to nearby Yangshuo. Days 6-7/Yangshuo In Yangshuo we enjoy a bike ride through scenic countryside before a peaceful cruise on the Li River. There is just so much to see and do in this picturesque market town; barter with the locals, kick back in a sidewalk café or explore the many caves in the surrounding area. An overnight train takes us further south to the former trading port of Guangzhou. Days 8-9/Hong Kong From Guangzhou we catch a hydrofoil into Hong Kongs spectacular Victoria Harbour  a great way to arrive in this vibrant, modern city. There are countless attractions and theres free time to do what you like. Our trip ends here the next morning  additional accommodation can be arranged on request. China at a Glance The differences between ancient and modern are more noticeable in China than in many other countries. One moment, you walk past ultra-modern office towers; after turning a corner, you find yourself in a medieval laneway, lined with ancient crumbling buildings. We spend a full day exploring the Great Wall at Simatai, an area relatively untouched by reconstruction. Days 5-6/Xian - Terracotta Warriors Xians most famous residents are the awesome army of Terracotta Warriors. In 1974, farmers uncovered these life-size clay soldiers, horses and chariots. After visiting this fascinating site, Xians Muslim Quarter is another place to explore, with the Great Mosque and its vast array of market stalls. Get ready to bargain! Days 7-0/Beijing - Great Wall During our time in the capital, we check out the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square and theres also free time to explore the many other sights of Beijing. Of course, a visit to China is not complete without taking a walk along the Great Wall  for many this will be a trip highlight.
