Dordogne & Lot
Deep, lush valleys and bright river waters
This is an ideal holiday location with a choice of outdoor interests, superb local food and break-taking scenery from gentle countryside with shady forests to wild rugged hills, as well as hundreds of miles of rivers flowing through spectacular gorges.
How to get there
Approx 10-12 hours drive from the western channel ferries a trip via Dover is best combined with an overnight stop on the way. Motorail will deliver you from Calais to Brive or Bordeaux. Flights are available to Limoges, Poitiers, Bergerac, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Rodez with daily flights from the UK.
Towns and resorts
There are wonderful fortified villages to explore, such as Domme or Monpazier, hilltop hamlets such as St Cirq Lapopie one of Frances listed most beautiful villages. On the pilgrims route to Compostella the towns of Conques and Rocamadour are spectacular with their churches, narrow streets and surrounding scenery. Many market towns along the Dordogne and Lot rivers such as Souillac, Bergerac and Cahors, were founded on trade along the waterways.
Attractions
Many of the regions chateaux are worth exploring, such as Beynac and Monpazier designed and built for battle, mainly during the 100 years war against England! Prehistoric sites such as Lascaux and Les Eyzies are a great feature of this area, with caves dating from the second ice-age and fantastic prehistoric art. Dont miss the Gouffre de Padirac, a natural rock chasm leading down to vast caves visted by boat on underground waterways.
Food and Wine
Duck and goose dishes abound here, such as magret de canard, foie gras paté, or duck confit. Mushrooms are hugely popular in all shapes and sizes. There are famous cheeses to sample St Nectaire, Bleu dAuvergne, Cantal, and complemented with wines of outstanding fame St Emilion, Monbazillac and Cahors.
