Tuscany & Umbria
Rolling countryside, ancient culture and delicious cuisine
Italy has long held an appeal for British tourists, seeking to appreciate the culture, beauty and charm of this diverse country and no region is more appealing than Tuscany and Umbria. First-time visitors are captivated by the spectacular scenery of the countryside and even the casual visitor cannot fail to marvel at the magnificent wonderful works of art and architecture throughout the region. Add to this mix, the range of wine and cuisine and a fascinating culture and its no wonder that this area of Italy has attracted visitors for longer than almost any other region of Europe.
Cuisine
Italian food will never seem the same again, after sampling the delights of true Tuscan and Umbrian cuisine. Pasta in this area is famed throughout Italy and even the tiniest village boasts a restaurant offering local specialities. The Italians believe in using local seasonal produce, so you can be sure to taste tomatoes, mushrooms and meat, especially game, as youve never tasted it before! Of course, the area is home to some of Italys most famous wines, including Chianti and Orvieto to add to the culinary enjoyment. Children are welcome everywhere and will adore the freshest pizzas and the wonderful selection of world-renowned ice creams!
Countryside
Just the mention of Tuscany and Umbria conjures up a hundred pictures: rolling hills, terraced vineyards, olive groves, sunflower fields and ancient forests, interspersed with quiet lanes guarded by upright cypress trees. This wonderful landscape is dotted with castles, manor houses, churches and hilltop villages, each with their own story to unfold.
How to get there
Tuscany and Umbria are served by a number of airports, with a selection of flights daily from the UK. Pisa and Florence airports are closest to northern and central Tuscany, while the south of the region and Umbria are almost equidistant from Pisa, Florence and Rome. Bologna is another option, with excellent motorway access to most of this part of Italy.
Culture
The wonders of Florence are widely known, from the majestic Duomo to the treasures of the Uffizi Gallery and the hustle and bustle of the street traders. However, hundreds of towns and villages boast their own history, ranging from the medieval walled town of Lucca and the hilltop town of San Gimignano with its competing towers, to Siena with its wonderful piazza, brought alive by the famous Palio each Summer. Further south, as Tuscany rolls into Umbria, more lesser explored jewels await, such as Arezzo, Assisi and Perugia. Its no wonder that one visit to this beautiful area is never enough!
