There might be lots of walking, camping and canned food, but every day promises a new adventure. There are black and white colobus monkeys to spot in the foothills, Giant Senecios to wind your way around in the alpine meadows and finally, an incredible view from the top that makes each and every step seem utterly worthwhile. It offers one of the best opportunities in the world to climb a peak at high altitude without needing technical climbing ability. Any normally fit, healthy person prepared to push themselves both physically and mentally should be able to complete the ascent to the crater rim and then on to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. rongai route This is a 6 day camping climb that approaches the summit from the north side and has the same final ascent route as the more popular Marangu route. Less forested, the route opens up to wide views over the Amboseli Plains and you will camp beside the only lake (tarn) on the mountain. The Rongai trek is about 60 kms long and sees fewer trekkers than the other routes. Machame route This is a 6 day camping climb, the most popular of the camping routes, that follows gradually rising paths through magnificent forests and moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. Marangu route This is a 5 day climb using mountain huts. This classic trek is the most popular and direct route, and the only one serviced by mountain huts to keep you well protected from the elements. Although it can be busy, the route is well maintained and is a fabulous hike to the spectacular summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Trek through grasslands, past giant cactii and through alpine meadows set against a background of mountain peaks. As with all Kili hikes, prepare yourself for an early morning, adrenaline-filled final walk to Uhuru Peak.
