east coast essence of the outback InDEPEnDEnT 8 days, ex Brisbane ITINERARY... Day 1 Brisbane Enjoy an ice-cold beer by the Brisbane River and perhaps wander through the arts precinct on its south bank. Board the train at dusk, bound for the Outback. Days 2-3 Cunnamulla Travel through open, sheep-speckled plains to Cunnamulla, a riverside pioneering town. When night falls, get spooked with a tour of the town graveyard. Feast on Aussie tucker by the campfire and look to the skies with a telescopic tour of the Outback's heavenly bodies. Days 4-5 Charlotte Plains Navigate a swing bridge at Rocky Station. Hitch a ride on a camel wagon for a safari through the Outback and slip into an ancient artesian spa for a relaxing soak. Dine with the camel guide under the stars. Day 6 Eulo After brunch in the bush, visit Lover's Leap. Fossick for an opal at Yowah, then get the loot cut to perfection at Yowah Gallery. Peruse some local Outback art, visit a date farm (perhaps choosing to indulge some date wine and a mud bath), then share a beer and a yarn with the locals at the pub. Make sure to get the story on Isabel, the Eulo Queen. Days 7-8 Cunnamulla/ Brisbane After getting the John Dory (story) about the Cunnamulla airport, bid farewell to new friends and board the train back to Brisbane. Day 1 Cairns Keep cool in tropical Cairns. Day 2 Lakefield National Park Hit rough 4WD tracks past giant termite mounds and wild scrub. Visit Indigenous cultural sites at Split Rock and ancient rock art in Quinkan Country. Visit the tiny town of Laura, then camp within the park. Day 3 Merluna Station Explore waterlily-laden billabongs, lagoons and waterholes but don't be tempted to take a dip - saltwater crocodiles lurk beneath. Spend the night camped at a family-operated cattle station. Day 4 Moreton Scattered with coconut palms and danger signs, the mining town of Weipa is an eye-opening interlude en route to Moreton. Later, go birdwatching at an old telegraph station, one of the few havens for the spectacular great palm cockatoo. Day 5 Indian Head Falls Tackle a rough and dusty ride on the Telegraph Track followed by a refreshing dip in spring-fed creeks. Camp by beautiful waterfalls and enjoy the bush atmosphere. Days 6-7 Torres Strait Camp/Cape York Cross the Jardine River by cable ferry. Relax on the tropical shores of the Torres Strait and lap up the luxuries of civilisation once more. At the ruins of what was once dubbed The Second Singapore', reflect on the adventures of past explorers. Touch Australia's northernmost tip: Cape York. Next day, opt for a cruise to Thursday Island, a guided fishing adventure or a stint of birdwatching. Day 8 Cairns After a scenic flight from the camp over the Great Barrier Reef, the adventure concludes in Cairns.
