countryside. Day 3 san Gimignano to colle Val d'elsa Follow paths through forests and over Tuscanys famous hills for views of a landscape almost unchanged since the Middle Ages. Continue on to Colle Val dElsa - once three towns, now one - a beautiful place with districts each distinct in style and history. Industry has played an important part in the towns past, as evidenced by its 11th century canal, which was built to power the busy wheat mills and paper factories. Day 4 colle Val d'elsa to Monteriggioni Continue across undulating farmland and past a fine Romanesque abbey to the hilltop town of Monteriggioni. Except for some brief work in the 16th century, little has changed within the towns ramparts since it was first built in the 13th century. Days 5-7 Monteriggioni to siena The final stretch leads to Europes best preserved medieval city, following a route through forests, past castles and across open pastures. With its abundance of outstanding 14th and 15th century art and architecture, Siena is sure to keep you occupied for days. Wander down to the unique Piazza del Campo, the centre of Sienese life. This is the site of the famous Palio horse race, and is surrounded by cafes, churches and shops - the perfect place to reflect upon a wonderful week of walking.

Days 3-4 Gubbio Take a cable car up Mt Ingino to the fine, frescoed basilica at its summit. Here, pay your respects to Saint Ubaldo, the towns patron saint, and enjoy stunning views over Umbria. Days 5-6 assisi and spello Umbrias religious heart is a wonderful place to explore on foot. See the Piazza Matteotti, Roman temple ruins, the magnificent Basilica di San Francesco, and the birthplace of St Francis. Days 7-8 rome The ancient sites and modern glories of Rome must be seen to be believed. Do some sightseeing, hit the designer shops, check out the buzzing night life or chill out on the Spanish Steps. Day 9 Naples The birthplace of pizza, Naples was also a crossroads for Spanish, Arab and African traders in days gone by. Now it is a busy metropolis with plenty of museums, galleries and markets to explore. Days 10-11 Pompeii Covered in a thick cloak of ash by neighbouring Mt Vesuvius, Pompeii has remained unchanged for 1,928 years. Explore this extraordinary ruined city before taking a closer look at the sleeping volcano. Days 12-15 sorrento Sun, sea and sensational seafood await. Explore the coastline, laid-back Sorrento and the villages of Amalfi and Positano - a fantastic way to finish this Italian experience.
