italy chianti and florence InDEpEnDEnT 8 days, Siena to Florence Departs daily from Apr - Oct itiNerary... Days 1-2 siena to Dievole Spend some time exploring Siena before stepping out into idyllic Tuscan landscapes. Follow rural tracks across patchwork hills and past stone-walled olive groves, vineyards and oak forests to Dievole. A 16th century villa, once home to Florentine nobility, offers shelter for tonight. Physical culture shock Day 3 Dievole to Gaiole-in-chianti Cross a valley to the fortified Romanesque church of San Polo in Rosso. Perched on a hill above sun drenched vineyards, the 1,000 year old church and castle were fought over by Siena and Florence for hundreds of years. From here, follow the path to Gaiole-in-Chianti, an ancient trading town. Days 4-5 Gaiole-in-chianti to Panzano Set out along a ridge before descending to the valley. Continue past stone farmhouses and vineyards to the hill town of Panzano. Enjoy a rest day within its ramparts or take an optional walk to Greve-in-Chianti, a busy centre devoted to the world-renowned wines, where it is possible to sample some Chianti Classico. Day 6 Panzano to strada-inchianti Tuscanys charms are fully displayed on this stroll along undulating paths, fertile valleys and past two fine castles. Walk uphill to Strada-in-Chianti, a small town situated on the northern edge of the famous wine region, where a room in a beautiful 17th century villa awaits. Days 7-8 strada-in-chianti to Florence Tracks and strade bianche lead through farmland before reaching the outskirts of Florence. This final walk along minor roads and pathways leads to a magnificent panorama of the city. Descend into Florence and cross the elegant Ponte Vecchio to arrive in the heart of Tuscany. Days 1-3 Pitigliano to sovana The town of Pitigliano seemingly grows from a rocky outcrop that rises from a gorge - a spectacular start to this walking adventure. After a free morning to explore the town with its medieval fortress and synagogue, its time to step out along an Etruscan road, over a Physical culture shock plateau and past vineyards to the charming town of Sovana. Here there is plenty of opportunity to explore the towns Romanesque churches and Etruscan ruins for which the area is renowned. Day 4 sovana to san Quirico From Sovana enter an impressive gorge before walking up to Sorano, situated high on a rocky spur. This small medieval town has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years. Continue up the gorge towards the ancient troglodyte village of Vitozza and then on to San Quirico. Days 5-6 san Quirico to Bolsena Follow cart tracks across farmland to an escarpment where paths descend towards the small town of Latera. Climb through chestnut woods to the rim of a volcanic crater and descend to Lake Bolsena. Take a break, then continue by boat or road transfer to Bolsena. Be sure to visit the church and catacombs of Santa Cristina, site of the miracle of Corpus Christi, in this attractive lakeside town of medieval alleyways and narrow cobbled streets. Days 7-8 Bolsena to orvieto After following an old Roman road through woodland and across farmland, the first view of Orvieto, situated upon a towering extinct volcano, is breathtaking. Orvieto was once a place of Papal residence and its cathedral and churches have been decorated accordingly.
