galapagos active galapagos Active 10 days, ex Quito itiNerary... Day 1 Quito Sitting at a high altitude under the gaze of the Pichincha Volcano, Quito is one of South Americas most attractive cities. Days 2-3 san cristobal island Take an exhilarat*plus Local Payment US$350 Physical culture shock ing downhill bike ride on San Cristobal, visit the Interpretation Centre to learn the history of the islands and swim at Mann Beach. Stop off at Isla de Lobos to see nesting frigate birds and take a swim at Kicker Rock, an underwater volcano rising out of the sea. Day 4 Floreana/isabela islands Keep an eye out for dolphins and the magnificent albatross on the way to Floreana Island. Experience excellent snorkelling at Enderby Islet, Champions Bay or Devils Crown. Days 5-6 isabela island A full day tour takes us to Sierra Negra Volcano, one of the Galapagos most active volcanoes. Here you can experience a birds eye view of this magical landscape. Jump into kayaks and cruise around the island spotting penguins up close. Day 7 santa cruz island See amazing lava tunnels, some over 1 km long, while taking in panoramic views of the islands. Head to Tortuga Bay, a stunning beach with fine white sand, to see marine iguanas or try your hand at body boarding or surfing. Day 8 santa cruz/santa Fe/san cristobal islands Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and observe many species of tortoises and iguanas, brought back from the brink of extinction. Enjoy a last swim or snorkel at Santa Fe to see marine iguanas and schools of surgeonfish. Days 9-10 Baltra/Quito Bid farewell to the stunning Galapagos Islands before returning to Quito for a final evening. Day 1 Quito Sitting beneath the gaze of Volcan Pichincha is Quito, a long and narrow city that winds its way down Single supplement available *plus Local Payment US$200 Physical culture shock to the Amazon Basin. Acclimatise to the high altitude by sitting in a shady plaza or taking a quiet stroll around the quaint Old Town. The Museo Nacional de Arte, housed in a 17th century mansion, has a fine collection of Ecuadorean sculpture and painting. Days 2-3 amazon Jungle Settle into a motorised canoe for a journey into the dense forest of the Amazon. Explore the jungle on guided walks to discover the rich variety of plantlife - the Amazon is home to an astonishing 500 species of tree per acre. Keep a lookout for the prehistoric hoatzin, with its brightly-coloured feathers and sharp talons, and other animals like tamarind, monkeys and the capybara - the worlds largest, and cutest, rodent. Days 4-5 Banos Travel by minibus along one of Ecuadors most scenic drives to Banos, meaning hot springs in Spanish. Its worth rising early to watch dawn creep over the mountains from the cosy comfort of one of these thermal baths. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and get active - Banos is famous as a playground for lovers of the great outdoors. Perhaps take a trip to the spectacular Devils Cauldron waterfalls. Days 6-7 cuenca Discover the best kept Incan site in Ecuador, Ingapirca, before arriving in Cuenca, a historic city with pleasant redtiled rooftops and shady plazas. Enjoy a visit to Cajas National Park, home to over 250 lakes, interesting wildlife - including black frogs, hummingbirds and condors - and impressive views.
