Lefkas,Meganissi & Parga
The unspoilt and picturesque shores of the northern Ionian are brimming with traditional Greek charm and appeal. On the beautiful neighbouring islands of Lefkas and Meganissi, intense rocky landscapes are softened by an array of green valleys, clear blue waters and long beaches. Across the sparkling sea on the enchanting, historic mainland, the huddled terracotta rooftops of picturesque Parga breathtakingly cling to the lush, pine-covered coastline.
On the beach
A variety of stunning beaches line the coasts of both the islands and the nearby mainland. On the secluded island of Meganissi, visitors have their pick of any of the wonderfully quiet beaches and hide-away coves, whilst the larger island of Lefkas offers fabulous stretches of shingle, sheltered with pine and olive trees to the waters edge. The western Greek mainland promises tranquil tree-lined bays whilst, for the more energetic, the popular beaches at Parga offer a range of activities for everyone.
Outdoor pursuits
Known as the sailing capital of the Ionian, you can expect to see otillas of yachts passing through and mooring up in Lefkas, Meganissi and Parga every day. Regular boat trips ferry passengers to neighbouring islands, weaving through the tiny islets and often accompanied by friendly and inquisitive dolphins hitching a ride on the wake. Both the islands and the undulating landscape of the mainland Epirus region are a paradise for walkers, and the various footpaths and trails are an ideal way to discover beautiful scenery off the beaten track.
Hints of history
Discovering western Greece is like opening a treasure-trove of ancient historical wonderment. A vast array of amphitheatres, historical sites and monuments pepper the undulating countryside, including the fabled gate of Hades. Lefkas and Meganissi have had their own unique cultures through the ages, now proudly displayed in various fascinating museums. The survival of the incredibly rich heritage of western Greece is testament to local people, who keep their traditions alive with time-honoured costume, cooking and pastimes.
