Ghent Canal cruise in Bruges
DAY 1 UK/Bruges Local departure and an afternoon crossing to Calais. Continue to the Belgian city of Bruges for a four night stay, arriving in the early evening. Enjoy a welcome drink at the hotel. DAY 2 Bruges We begin our exploration of Bruges with an included city tour this morning and a cruise on the canals. Capital of West Flanders, Bruges has a delightful old centre with an abundance of attractions, from the traditional gabled houses and majestic churches to narrow cobbled streets and charming canals. Not forgetting the world famous lace, chocolates, beer and of course chips with mayonnaise! Your afternoon is free to explore the city further, whether on foot or even on a horse and carriage ride through the cobbled streets. Alternatively, you can relax and soak up the atmosphere in one of the many bars and cafés or visit one of the cosy tap rooms to sample the famous Belgian beer. Meals: B DAY 3 Bruges Today you are free to discover more of Bruges independently, or join our optional excursion: Meals: B Antwerp diamond museum The pretty town of Antwerp is renowned for its diamond industry. Join us on this morning's visit to its excellent Diamond Museum to find out more about these precious sparkling stones. Ypres & Last Post Ceremony An afternoon excursion to Ypres, devastated during some of the worst fighting of World War I, but now beautifully restored. There will be time to explore the town and you may like to visit the In Flanders Fields museum before we attend the moving Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in the evening before returning to Bruges. Note: The In Flanders Fields museum will be closed for renovation until June 2012. We will visit an alternative museum for dates affected. DAY 4 Ghent Today we include an excursion to Ghent, one of Belgium's oldest cities. With its elegant medieval architecture, network of canals and cobbled streets, it's a delight to explore. Perhaps visit the Graslei, the city's medieval port, the Castle of the Counts of Flanders, or even one of the city's many museums. There will be an included farewell dinner at the hotel this evening. Meals: B/D DAY 5 Bruges/UK Depart after breakfast and travel to Calais for a late afternoon crossing back to the UK, returning to your original departure point in the evening.
