Situated in the north of the country, Portugal's Costa Verde (Green Coast) is a haven of sleepy fishing villages, medieval towns and sandy beaches. The verdant forests and fruit groves of the countryside sweep down to the coast, where the lively resorts are the ideal location for our funpacked Portuguese party, featuring live music, shows and dancing.
YOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1 Meet your travelling companions at the airport and depart on your scheduled flight to Oporto. On arrival transfer to your hotel in Póvoa de Varzim, a former fishing village and now a popular resort, for a seven night stay. Enjoy a welcome drink at the hotel. DAYS 2 TO 7 Free to relax and enjoy our two included excursions as follows: Oporto Highlights A full day excursion to Portugal's second city, known worldwide as the home of port wine. We visit the famous Vila Nova de Gaia wine cellars for a tasting or two, followed by a cruise on the River Douro to enjoy the spectacular views of Oporto from the water. Viana & medieval Valença - A fascinating three-quarter day excursion visiting firstly the folklore capital of Portugal, Viana do Castelo. We can stroll through the quaint streets in the old quarter past the magnificent Cathedral and old Town Hall and visit the ancient Chuch of Santa Luzia on top of Santa Luzia hill with an spectacular views of the town, the river estuary and the sea. We continue to the medieval border town of Valença, where we will have time to wander through the cobbled alleyways where you find a number of shops selling linen, wickerwork, pottery and handicrafts. Y You can also join the following optional excursions: Heart of Portugal - A three-quarter day scenic tour visiting the prosperous town of Guimarães and its magnificent castle, where the first king of Portugal was born. We also call in at the picturesque town of Amarante on the edge of the Douro Valley. Minho The Garden of Portugal - Enjoy exploring the beautiful Minho region on this wonderful full day tour. We will visit the ancient town of Barcelos, situated on a hill above the River Cavado, it is one of the prettiest places in the north of Portugal with its ancient churches, large Campo da Republica square and ruins of the Duke of Braganca Palace. Today Barcelos is best known for its handmade pottery, especially the brightly-painted clay cockerel, whose crowing reputedly saved a man from the gallows. We drive on to Braga, one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal and often called the `Portuguese Rome' with its many ornate churches and baroque buildings. Highlights include the Roman Idol's Fountain, the medieval cathedral and the Gothic tower of Braga Castle. Outside the city centre, we will visit the marvellous church of Bom Jesus do Monte with its magnificent stairway. On the final evening, enjoy a farewell get-together. DAY 8 Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
YOUR HOTEL
Y You will stay in the excellent four star Novotel Porto Vermar in Póvoa de Varzim, overlooking the shoreline. The hotel features an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, restaurant, bar and lift. All rooms have private facilities, TV, telephone, and minibar.
