Words and photographs cannot begin to do justice to the magnificent `Land of the Pharaohs'. Only by being there can you appreciate the splendour and majesty of the mighty pyramids or the magic of the vibrant culture. A cruise on the Nile is the journey of a lifetime. Combined with a visit to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, this superb holiday offers a wealth of new experiences and memories to treasure forever.
YOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1 - Meet your travelling companions in the A executive lounge, prior to your scheduled flight to Cairo for a two night stay. This evening there will be a welcome drink at the hotel. DAY 2 - Today we have an included tour to the A legendary Pyramids and the Sphinx. The great Pyramids of Giza stand on a rocky plateau on the western bank of the Nile. They are the most famous, intensely measured, studied and debated monuments in the world and stand as an imperishable landmark to the geometrical accuracy and technical skill that went into their making. Close to the Pyramids lies the magnificent Sphinx, a huge statue of a recumbent lion with a human head believed to be fashioned in the likeness of the Pharoh Chephren. During the afternoon we take a trip to the world-famous Egyptian Museum, which houses the richest store or remains including the treasures from the tombs of Tutankhamen and other Pharaohs. DAY 3 - Morning transfer to Cairo Airport for your flight A to Luxor. On arrival transfer to your cruise ship for four nights. You will see many of Egypt's archaeological treasures on your included tours as you cruise down the Nile. In the afternoon you will visit the Temple at Karnak and the Luxor Temple. Dedicated to the creator good amun, Luxor was originally linked to Karnak, the oldest, largest and most imposing Pharonic temple complex by the three mile-long Avenue of Sphinx. Highlights include the monumental Great Hypostyle Hall and Queen Hatsheput's pink granite obelisk. According to legend, a wish made beside the sacred lake is certain to come true! DAYS 4 & 5 - Sailing along the Nile, with time to explore A the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, dedicated to the cow-eared goddess Hathor, the awesome Colossi of Memnon and the fabulous Valley of the Kings. So far, 64 Pharaohs' tombs have been excavated, including Tutankhaman's burial chamber discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. Vivid carvings and paintings depict the religious rituals and earthly goods needed by deceased Pharohs in the afterlife. We continue to Edfu to view the 2,000 year old Ptolemaic Temple dedicated to the god Horus with its incredibly well preserved frescoes. DAY 6 - Today we visit the temple of Kom Ombo A dedicated to gods Sobek the crocodile and Horus the falcon. The walls are covered with amazing heiroglyphics and carvings, which show the Egyptians knew much about medicine, used a 30day/12 month calendar and produced perfumes. We sail on to Aswan to visit the Aswan Dam, enjoy a felucca ride around Elephantine Island and see the Philae Temple, built in honour of the goddess Isis. This evening will be spent on board the cruise ship. DAY 7 - Relax or join our optional early morning trip by A air to Abu Simbel, one of the most spectacular manmade features on earth. Nothing can prepare you for the spectacular sight of the four colossi of Ramses II carved out of the rock and standing 65ft high. Outside the entrance to his magnificent temple are smaller statues of his family, plus two of his wife Nefertari and four of Ramses himself standing in front of her temple next door. The paintings and carvings inside will take your breathe away. You will then transfer to the airport for your return flight to Cairo and an overnight stop. Farewell dinner this evening. DAY 8 - Transfer to the airport for your return flight to A the UK.
YOUR HOTELS
Accommodation in Cairo will be in the Helnan Shepheard Hotel. Rooms are air-conditioned and feature private facilities, TV and telephone. Facilities include restaurant and bar.
YOUR CRUISE SHIP
Your cruise ship will be the MS Nile Rhapsody or similar, a four star ship with comfortable en suite cabins. The spacious public areas include a restaurant, lounge area, bar, swimming pool and sundeck. The vessel is fully air-conditioned.
