INTRODUCTION
BOTSWANA
see & do
OKAVANGO DELTA This lush green region of the country is in complete contrast to the drier areas. This maze of channels and lagoons is really quite stunning. The delta is a draw for all kinds of wildlife from crocodiles and buffalo to wild dogs, warthogs and numerous species of bird. The best way to explore this fascinating place is by mokoro which is a type of dug out canoe poled by local guides. You will find their knowledge of the bush quite outstanding and you will have many opportunities to get `up close and personal' with a whole spectrum of wildlife. KALAHARI DESERT The vast wilderness of the Kalahari covers almost 70% of Botswana and extends into neighbouring Namibia and South Africa. Despite its seemingly inhospitable conditions there is a huge variety of wildlife to be seen.
The area known as Deception Valley lies in an ancient riverbed and supports a whole variety of game. If you are lucky you will be able to see lion, brown hyena, giraffe and perhaps even leopard. This vast and isolated region is probably one of the most spectacular in Africa, if you are looking for a real adventure a visit to the Kalahari is a must, It's hot, dry and dusty but the rewards for wildlife enthusiasts simply make those factors pale into insignificance. CAMPING A camping safari really puts you close to nature, you live and breathe the life of the bush, nothing can be more exhilarating than waking to the sound of animal calls or watching the sun go down around the camp fire. Certainly if you have been on safari before you should really consider this option, be prepared for early starts and early nights, by doing so you will be in tune with nature and really benefit from the true Africa experience.
CHOBE NATIONAL PARK The second largest National Park in the country it sprawls over 4,000 square miles and includes the diverse ecosystem of the Savute marshes and Linyanti. Well known for its large elephant population, with huge herds often seen on the banks of the Chobe River. Game viewing by boat is an excellent way to explore the area and expert guides really help you to get the most out of your visit. There is a large variety of bird and animal life and the area is renowned for its magnificent scenery and remarkable sunsets.
