striking & scenic
From a lion roar to a bird chirp, a Masai warrior to fisherman, snow-capped peaks to thick forests and silver beaches to grassy plains Kenya is a land as diverse as your imagination. At the heart of East Africa, straddling the equator, is a land of wildlife documentary heaven and a sunbathers paradise. The country is host to the largest animal movement in the world during the annual migrations into the Masai Mara, boasts residency of the `big five' elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard, and has a heritage and culture which fascinates those who visit.
in a word
Kenya has been `home' to the safari (meaning `journey' in Swahili) for many years, for the valid reason that it offers some of the best and most accessible game viewing in the world. Kenya is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the northeast, the warm crystal waters of the Indian Ocean on the east coast, Tanzania to the south and Uganda on the west. This eclectic range of influences have worked their way into the magic of Kenya's culture and traditions over history, with immigrants bringing different tribal ideologies throughout the centuries. When visiting Kenya, besides the `wow' factor of seeing wild animals and experiencing award winning beaches, you will have the opportunity to learn more 148 about the fascinating tribal lifestyles. The six million Kikuyu represent the largest tribal group in Kenya and are believed to have migrated to this area around the 16th Century from North and East Africa. Certainly a country of many famous names such as the Big Cat Diaries, filmed in the Masai Mara, Out of Africa and Born Free, it is therefore no surprise Kenya is the most popular tourist destination of East Africa. Despite this, with the range and vastness of over forty parks, you can still feel a privileged remoteness in many areas. In particular, the parks in the North are less frequently visited. We also recommend travelling off-peak for a more private experience.
