INTRODUCTION K E N YA see & do THE MIGRATION The Mara receives an influx of over two million migratory animals during the annual migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania. The animals tend to arrive around June or July, lured by the green grasses following the rains in May. They roam in the Mara until anytime between August, right up until December when they move down into Tanzania once again, in their clockwork fashion to breed. This cycle affords supreme game viewing, especially for those fortunate enough to witness a river crossing, where crocodiles wait in the water and lions prey on the other side. THE PARKS The Mara is perhaps the most famous game reserve in the world. This land of vast savannah's, home to the big five as well as the fascinating Masai people, is a paradise for safari lovers. The camps we have suggested for you in the following itineraries are situated in prime game viewing territory. Besides the migration, the game viewing is also quite spectacular year round. Our winter months offer superb viewing of resident game such as buffalo grazing, giraffe necking, gazelle dancing, elephant with their young, the big cats pouncing and hippos wallowing to name just a few. Even when the rains come in May, some of the game viewing is fantastic, if you don't mind watching some raindrops too! The area north of Nairobi and Mount Kenya has a different ecosystem to the south. Acacia woodland is intercepted by bush, grass and scrubland. Samburu game reserve is a lava plain, featuring steep sided gullies and rounded hills. Meanwhile, the south eastern parks of Tsavo contrast again with a distinct, deep red soil. Semi arid acacia scrub is intersected by lush greenery at the riverbanks meandering through Tsavo. In Amboseli, at the north west foot of Mount Kilimanjaro (which is in Tanzania), the plains are open savannah grasslands and rolling hills with swamplands and occasional springs. THE COAST Kenya's 300 mile coastline offers white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters. The exotic ambience, friendly people and fresh seafood are some of the unique properties of a beach holiday here. Relaxing at the coast is an ideal way to finish a safari or enjoy a beach holiday on its own. The coast stretches many miles and offers diverse options from the trendy and beautiful Diani coast, south of Mombasa, to the more rural beauty of Watamu, north of Mombasa. The island of Funzi, just a short boat ride from the mainland offers a Robinson Crusoe style remote paradise. THE PEOPLE The people of Kenya will add so much to your visit. They are kind and helpful by nature and really make the experience of Kenya extra special. THE CAPITAL Nairobi is often forgotten amidst the marvel of the animals and beauty of the coast, but this town envelops a history and culture as well as a representation of daily life. We recommend taking a little time to explore its hidden treasures such as the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. 1 A lion's eyesight is five times better than a human's 2 Kenya has 70 different tribes 3 Elephants live up to 80 years 4 Lovely Kenyan beaches 5 Giraffe world's tallest animal 6 Stunning Kenyan sunsets 7 Say cheese! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 KENYA REGIONAL MAP Cha'mo Hoyk Lake Turkana Chalbi D e s e rt INFORMATION Capital: Nairobi.
