This large and diverse country is four times the size of the United Kingdom, with 25% of the land dedicated to national parks and reserves. The wild and rustic country has provided excellent safari's in the `northern circuit' around the Masai Steppe for many years, where an abundance of wildlife and established lodges exist. However there is also a lot more to this special land. The ecosystems in Tanzania draw from the diverse countries, which surround it, thus creating a landscape, which varies from densely forested mountains to the west, in which the primates reside, to the flat plains where game play and snow-capped mountains that frame the skyline. Tanzania has the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to the east and vast lakes of Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi to the west. She is a country of cultural diversity as well the result of African, Arab, Asian and European influences throughout history, which have continued since the independence of the Republic of Tanzania in 1963.
