INTRODUCTION
ZAMBIA
see & do
LOWER ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK Arriving by air into the park is really quite breathtaking; you will see the oxbow lakes and sandy shores of the mighty Zambezi. From on high you may see herds of elephant stopping for a drink or a swim in the river, pods of hippo cooling themselves from the heat of the day. In the park itself you will find a whole wealth of game large prides of lion are frequently seen along with impala, kudu and zebra. The area was declared a national park relatively recently and for this reason remains unspoilt, enjoying high level protection from the government. VICTORIA FALLS When you see the falls up close it is little wonder that they are considered to be one of the wonders of the natural world. It is actually divided into six separate waterfalls, Devil's Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, Armchair Falls and Eastern Cataract.
Huge clouds of spray rise up hundreds of feet into the air as millions of gallons of water cascade over the top. In April they are at their most fabulous, swollen by the rains. The spectacle is quite remarkable and cannot be missed whatever time of year you choose. On a practical note because of the spray it is advisable to take some light waterproof clothing or hire it locally. SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK The park is rated as one of the best national parks in Africa, the landscape changes from dense forest to wide grassy plains dotted with oxbow lakes which act as natural water holes. You can hope to see lion, buffalo, zebra and giraffe. As well as this the park is also home to one of Africa's largest elephant populations, and if you are really lucky you may catch a glimpse of the shy leopard. The Luangwa River is home to hippo and crocodile. For sheer diversity of scenery and profusion of animals this is probably one of the best places in the country if not the continent.
KAFUE NATIONAL PARK Zambia's largest national park, about the size of Wales, is home to a breathtaking variety of landscapes and ecosystems. At the centre of the park's patchwork landscape the Kafue River provides the rich hippo, elephant and buffalo populations ample water. Kafue's resident is as versatile as it's habitats and includes impala, puku, zebra, wildebeest and waterbuck. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. On the vast plains of the north are islands of lush green palms and sausage trees, and fig trees that provide cover for lions on the hunt amongst the massive herds of Lechwe.
