INTRODUCTION CAPE TOWN
SOUTH AFRICA
see & do
TABLE MOUNTAIN The cable car journey to the top of Table Mountain should not be missed. The views as you ascend are really quite tremendous. The cable cars depart approximately every 10 minutes (high season) and 20 minutes (low season). At the top there are some souvenir shops and a café as well as a variety of easy walks to follow. The best time to visit is either first thing in the morning or in the evening. ROBBEN ISLAND No stay in the city would be complete without making the journey to this infamous penal institution which was declared a UN World Heritage Site in 1999. The visit includes a boat journey to the island, tour around the facility by coach as well as a more detailed walking tour with a former prison inmate. You will hear anecdotes about Nelson Mandela and see the lime quarry where he once worked. Fascinating and moving and a definite `must see' for every visitor.
CAPE POINT For some really breathtaking scenery take a trip to Cape Point where there are some fabulous walks and wild deserted beaches. It is quite a steep walk to the top but well worth the effort, although there is a funicular if you are feeling faint hearted! Learn about the ships who failed to negotiate this perilous piece of coast, see the now disused lighthouse and find out about the life of the lighthouse keeper. In springtime it is particularly pretty as the wildflowers are in bloom. MALAY QUARTER OF BO-KAAP Sitting in the west of the city this is one of the most colourful and interesting districts. Charming winding narrow streets are lined by beautifully restored houses painted in pastel colours. This is where the original Cape Malay settlers lived and their descendants remain to this day keeping their own traditions and identity.
KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDENS Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world, sitting on the east of Table Mountain with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. There is plenty of parking at the entrance and you can spend your time walking through the immaculately manicured gardens. The restaurant does excellent picnic boxes which make an ideal lunch stop while you relax and marvel at the huge variety of plants and trees.
