Gauteng is the Sotho word meaning `Place of Gold'. Blending cultures and colours, traditions old and new this is the place where the multi layered melting pot that is modern South Africa can truly be seen. The North West Province is one of South Africa's least known and most underrated, housing the Pilanesberg National Park and family resort of Sun City.
in a word
In recent years city life in Johannesburg, or Jozi as the locals call it, has changed enormously with most attractions for the visitor based around the suburban areas. There is plenty to enjoy here from the boho chic of Melville, with its vibrant café culture, to the quiet gentility of Parkhurst where the streets abound with smart antique shops. Sandton is the place to go if you want to shop within a huge shopping centre offering everything from designer goods to African art whilst in Rosebank there is an excellent African craft market, which is just the place to pick up a bargain. With the coming of the Soccer World Cup in 2010, the region is seeing a great transformation and is quickly becoming a city worthy of longer stays. 76 Also worth a visit is the capital Tshwane (formerly Pretoria), where monuments, government buildings and beautiful parks combine to make an absorbing city with lots to see and do. Unmissable in this part of South Africa is Sun City, one of the tourist icons of the country. Home to a range of activities for all the family and a choice of accommodation to suit most budgets, it is easily reached from either Johannesburg or Tshwane.
