There are few places which can boast such a diversity of landscape. Much of the country's fruit and vegetables are produced here due to the fertile soil and benign climate. Travel Tips: Though distances are short between Cape Wineland towns and villages, take your time ­ there is so much to see. Self drive is the best way of getting around. This area enjoys excellent climatic conditions and rich soil enabling a whole variety of excellent wines, fruit, flowers and vegetables to be grown here, some of which may end up on our tables at home! Wine production has long been a part of the landscape here since the arrival of the first European settlers. South African wines are acclaimed worldwide for their excellent quality and no trip to this part of the world would be complete without taking in some of the excellent wineries. Cape Point 1 Grootbos Struisbaai Cape Agulhas 2 see & do WINE REGION Probably the highlight of any trip to the Cape Winelands, this charming town not only has some of the best examples of Cape Dutch architecture in the country but is surrounded by mountains and rolling vineyards. The pretty tree lined streets are a delight as you can browse the shops and discover fine food and wine. Most wineries offer `behind the scenes' tours, tasting and many have restaurants or picnic facilities. It also makes a convenient base for exploring the surrounding region with Cape Town and Cape Point within easy reach. The charming village of Franschhoek lies in the heart of the winelands, less than an hour's drive from Cape Town. Surrounded by majestic mountains and lush fertile valleys it is one of the most scenically stunning places in the Western Cape. Franschhoek is known as the gourmet capital of South Africa and is home to some of the country's top restaurants, an excellent choice for `foodies'. 46 A stunningly set town lying at the foot of the `Paarl' mountain from which it gets its name. The centre of the wine producing industry, housing KWV - the country's largest estate. It is also home to probably the best restaurant in South Africa Bosman's and several world class golf courses. OVERBERG A vastly underrated area, which is home to Hermanus, the small, charming and laid back town, which is home to some of the best whale watching in the Southern Hemisphere between June and December. Fantastic beaches, mountain walks and some stunning nature reserves such as Grootbos make this one of the most popular regions in the country.
