Known as South Africa's garden province it stretches along the east coast to the border with Mozambique. This is an area of lush green valleys, wonderful subtropical coastline and dramatic mountains. This is a popular region for visitors from all over South Africa, tempted by the perpetual `summer' climate and miles of wonderful sandy beaches. Durban is centrally located on Kwazulu Natal's coast and has a holiday playground atmosphere. As one of the fastest growing cities in the world so be prepared for a bustling city. It also boasts some fantastic beaches perfect for swimming and surfing. Away from the city there is plenty to see and do not least the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park (formerly Greater St. Lucia) home to countless, hippo, elephants and crocodiles. The battlefields will show you where some of the most turbulent conflicts in the country's history took place and an organised tour is certainly a good idea to help you gain a full understanding of the power struggle that existed in the area. The Drakensberg Mountains are part of a vast national park and offer spectacular scenery with waterfalls and craggy peaks, no wonder that it is often referred to as Little Switzerland. This is an excellent place to plan a self drive holiday, with a good choice of accommodation, reasonable driving distances and lots to see and do. The Southern coastal towns of Selbourne, Ramsgate and Margate provide an enclave of relaxation, away from the bustle of the city and hosts some of the country's finest beaches and golf courses.
