INTRODUCTION ALASKA see & do ANCHORAGE Anchorage is the states cultural capital and largest city (Juneau is the actual capital); known in the summer as `The City of Flowers', and `The City of Lights' in winter. This compact little city has a pedestrian friendly bustling downtown, with a good selection of bars and restaurants. Anchorage is also noted for its theatres, museums and galleries, many displaying local and cultural art. All of this, surrounded by stunning countryside with an unparalleled system of hiking, cycling and ski (winter only) trails. It is not unusual to see a bear or moose wandering down one of the main roads! TALKEETNA This picturesque, laid back hamlet was the inspiration for the television series `Northern Exposure'. It is a three block town that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and perhaps best matches the rest of the worlds fantasies of what Alaskan town life must be like. Talkeetna is used by climbers and their teams during June and July, as they prepare to climb the Mckinley Range. Its population of 720 is increased many-fold by visitors, usually stopping on their way to, or from Denali National Park. SEWARD This scenic town serves as a picturesque gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park. Seward has an adorable downtown, a thriving fishing industry and is the starting point for some breath-taking cruise tours of the surrounding inlets and fjords, where you can see bears, whales, seals, puffins, glaciers, and much more. The whole area is a wilderness wonderland and can be reached, from Anchorage by car; a 2½ hour journey on one of the most scenic highways in the country, or by train, a journey complete with glaciers, steep gorges and rugged mountain scenery. NATIONAL PARKS Alaska has 84,375 sq miles of administered national parks, preserves and monuments, including Katmai, one of the best places in the world to see grizzly bears, up close, in their natural habitat. There is Denali National Park, home to much wildlife, including bears, wolves, arctic foxes, many bird species and of course the awesome Mount Mckinley, and the whole Mckinley Mountain range. Others include the The Klondike Goldrush National Historical Park, Kenai Fjords National Park and the Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. 1 Chilikat River Valley 2 Brown bear 3 Humpback whale 4 Mendenhall Glacier 5 Dramatic Alaskan sunset 6 Floatplanes common mode of Alaskan transport 1 2 3 4 5 6 ALASKA REGIONAL MAP Wrangel Island INFORMATION Barrow BEAUFORT SEA ARCTIC OCEAN Wainwright Prudhoe Bay Colville S OK Great Bear Lake CHUKCHI SEA RUSSIA Iultin Point Hope Kotzeb R A N G E Fort McPherson Fort Good Hope rc tic R Norman Wells ue O BR So Fort Yukon Yu ko un MACKENZIE M TS gS tra i d n Yukon Dawson City Anadyr' GULF OF ANADYR Teller Tanana Fairbanks Be Nome Norton Sound Alaska Unalakleet Mt.
