INTRODUCTION S O U T H E R N S TAT E S see & do MEMPHIS No trip to Memphis is complete without a visit to Graceland, which is located in the south of downtown. Even if you are not an Elvis fan you will not fail to be impressed by the collection of cars, airplanes, musical awards and Elvis memorabilia. Beale Street is the heart of Memphis's entertainment district and is lined with restaurants, shops and electric bars and nightclubs. A tour around the colossal mansion of Graceland is also available (p92). NASHVILLE Best know as the capital of country music. The Country Hall of Music honours scores of outstanding musicians such as Patsy Cline. The Grand Ole Opry is one of Nashville's main landmarks, which holds many concerts where artists from past and present perform. GREAT SMOKY NATIONAL PARK The Great Smoky Mountains earn their name from the smoke-like haze that clings to the ridge and are home to some of the highest mountains in eastern America. Take time to visit `Dollywood' near Pigeon Forge where you can jump on thrilling rollercoaster rides and enjoy country music. CHARLESTON One of the south's most beautiful cities. Overflowing with history, with charming streets and historic districts. Enjoy walking tours or horsedrawn carriage rides around this warm city. Explore the open-air markets, the historic district and spectacular plantations such as Middleton Place which is located just outside the city. Whilst in Charleston visit Fort Sumter, an island located at the entrance to Charleston Harbour where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. You can't help but fall in love with Charleston. SAVANNAH Savannah has been called the `most beautiful city in America' and this is well deserved. People who have seen or read `Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil', will fully appreciate how special Savannah is. Explore the city's beautiful squares or stroll along River Street, the city's entertainment district. Savannah will not fail to impress you. NEW ORLEANS New Orleans is back! The city has never looked so good! Known for many years as the 'Big Easy', New Orleans is a city like no other. A city of sights, sounds and tastes, this is a truly mystical and fascinating place. The French Quarter and Bourbon Street are full of restaurants, bars and jazz clubs. If you enjoy shopping head to the French Market which sells jewellery, pottery and African arts and crafts. Take a cruise along the Mississippi River on a paddlewheel steamboat to complete your New Orleans experience (see p92 for further information). After visiting New Orleans explore the state of Louisiana and experience one of the 600 year round festivals, including Cajun Dance and food festivals.
